After buying things from Haven Mall, Clara went straight to her parents' house.
At the dinner table, her mother kept putting food on her plate.
"The day after tomorrow... you're going to handle the formalities, right?" Clara's mom asked hesitantly. "Shall Mom come with you? Your dad and I are worried about you going alone."
Clara's mom grew more anxious as she spoke. "What if he shows up and changes his mind?"
Clara saw the new gray at her parents’ temples, and guilt tightened in her throat. She smiled to reassure them. "Really, no need. Mr. Reed and Simon are both with me. It's just getting a certificate and a stamp. It'll be very quick."
"But..."
"Alright, Mom, please rest assured." Clara held her mother's hand. "I'm going to get a divorce, not into a brawl. If I bring my parents, the staff will think I haven't been weaned yet."
She didn't want her parents to see that kind of scene.
Even more, she didn't want Rhys to think that she couldn't even stand on her own without him, that she needed her parents to back her up.
Clara's dad stared at his daughter for a long while before finally letting out a long sigh and patting his wife's hand. "Okay, let's listen to the child. Let her handle it herself. Our Clara... has grown up."
After dinner, Clara's mom acted out of character and didn't ask her to stay long, urging her to go back and rest early.
Clara could guess the reason. Just as she changed her shoes, her phone vibrated twice in her bag.
Noah: [Is your health better? Still running a fever?]
Clara replied while tying her scarf: [I'm fine. Lively enough to come back to my parents' for dinner.]
Noah replied instantly: [Are you going back to Shady Lane tonight?]
[Yes.]
Just as she wanted to ask if he needed something, Noah's next message popped up directly.
[Is it convenient to send me your location? I'll come to pick you up.]
He added: [The wind has picked up outside. As a doctor, I should probably take responsibility for my patient.]
Clara looked at the screen, thinking, "You're a pediatrician, though."
But eventually, she deleted her refusal and sent the location.
Sometimes, flatly refusing kindness only made things awkward for both parties.
Half an hour later, Clara said goodbye to her parents and went downstairs.
