The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 209

April in Heron Bay brought warm winds.

Clara walked out of the airport and took a deep breath.

Simon pushed the luggage cart ahead of her, shoved his sunglasses onto his head, turned around, and spread his arms wide.

"Smell that? Clara, smell it!"

Clara glanced at him. "Fish. It smells like fish."

"Philistine! You have no soul!" Simon tutted. "That is the smell of freedom! The scent of money! The aroma of our Peanut growing up strong!"

Clara's mom and dad followed behind. Seeing the relaxed smile on their daughter's face, their lingering anxieties vanished.

"Let's go."

Clara turned back and waved to her parents. "To our new home."

Rhys was forcibly shoved into a car by Zachary and escorted back to the precinct dorms.

Although nothing serious had happened, the sight of him suddenly kneeling in the middle of the road had scared the squad witless.

After a cold shower, the roar of the plane still echoed in his ears like tinnitus. He couldn't calm down.

He kept thinking about his aunt's comment: *"She was staring at the clothes in the baby store for a long time."*

Given Clara's personality, if she were truly grieving the loss, she would avoid anything related to children. She absolutely wouldn't stop to look.

The incongruity and a gnawing need to know made it impossible for him to sit still.

Checking the time, Rhys grabbed his car keys and headed to Haven Mall.

On the way, he called Mia to ask for the store's location. Mia scolded him, telling him he was wasting his time.

But Rhys thought that if he couldn't be part of her future, he selfishly wanted to spy on the traces she had left behind.

Even just a little.

Before long, he stood at the entrance of "The Little Swan," a high-end baby boutique.

In the window hung a pale yellow onesie, next to a matching plush duckling.

It was tiny. Only about the size of his two hands put together.

Was this what Clara had been looking at?

Rhys reached out, tracing the outline in the air through the glass.

What would such tiny clothes look like on a child?

"Sir? Are you looking for clothes for a baby?"
