If anything had truly happened to him on her watch, offering her own life to the Bridges family wouldn't have been enough to make up for it.
Felix, being squeezed a bit too tight, patted Eloise's back with his small hand.
"Eloise, I'm fine. This gentleman saved me."
Eloise finally snapped out of it, hastily wiped her face, and turned to thank Rhys profusely.
"Thank you! Thank you so much! Sir, you truly saved our whole family's lives! If that had hit him..."
As she spoke, she finally got a good look at the savior's face.
She froze.
She looked at Rhys, then looked down at Felix.
This man looked a bit fierce, but...
"Sir, you..." Eloise was a simple, honest woman, and the words just tumbled out. "You and this child look so much alike!"
Rhys, who was brushing dust off his tactical pants, paused.
He lowered his eyes, his gaze landing on the little guy again.
Did they?
Maybe the eyes a little. Both were dark, and neither seemed fond of smiling.
Rhys looked away and didn't comment.
Felix wriggled out of Eloise's arms, walked up to Rhys, and tilted his head back.
Big and small, they locked eyes from half a meter apart.
Felix reached out a tiny hand and pointed at Rhys's elbow.
"Sir, you're bleeding."
Rhys glanced at it. "It's nothing."
"That's not okay," Felix said seriously. "You saved me. I should pay your medical bill."
Rhys was taken aback, the corner of his mouth lifting in a faint arc. "Do you have money?"
Felix thought for a moment, then ran to the side to pick up the box of hushpuppies that had spilled.
There were originally six. Four had rolled onto the ground, but two remained safe inside the box.
He walked back and handed the box to Rhys.
"Here. For you. Thank you for saving me."
Rhys looked at the slightly crushed disposable box held up in front of him.
It was the most unique "medical payment" he had ever received.
He crouched down so he was at eye level with the child.
"What's your name?"
His and Clara's child would have been about this age this year, wouldn't he?
Would he be like this kid? Cool, smart, not crying when faced with danger? Would he call his dad a hero?
...
Eloise held Felix's hand, still shaken.
"Felix, about today... can we not tell your mom? She'll worry herself sick, and I... I'll lose my job."
Felix considered this. "Okay. But tomorrow I want three hushpuppies."
Eloise nodded vigorously.
After walking a bit further, Felix couldn't resist looking back one more time.
The man was gone.
"Eloise."
"Yes?"
"That gentleman smelled different from Daddy Noah."
"Really? What did he smell like?"
Felix frowned, thinking hard for a long time.
"I don't know."
