"Yeah." Rhys replied. His gaze lingered on their silhouettes for a moment before he asked in a hoarse voice, "You are..."
He wanted to ask if she was returning to Heron Bay, but Clara misunderstood.
She steadied herself and placed a hand on Felix's head.
"My son," Clara said naturally. "I'm married."
Seeing her defensive posture, Rhys smiled bitterly inside.
He nodded cooperatively. "He's cute. How old?"
"Three."
Clara shaved nearly a year off his age. The height difference between a three-year-old and a four-year-old wasn't visually obvious anyway.
Rhys didn't expose her lie. He murmured low, "Hmm, that's good."
The team member had finished selecting his food and turned around. "Rhys, I'm done. What do you want?"
"I'm not hungry. Just grab me a water." Rhys turned sideways, pressing against the shelf to clear the narrow path. "You two go first."
Clara nodded and led Felix forward.
Just as they were about to brush past, Felix, who had been obediently following Clara, suddenly stopped.
Clara tugged him, but he didn't budge. "Do you want something else?"
Felix ignored his mother. His eyes were fixed on Rhys's left hand hanging by his side.
A bandage was wrapped around that hand. It hadn't been there the last time they met.
Back at the kindergarten gate, when that electric bike had rushed toward him, this gentleman had shielded him, rolling on the ground to protect him. His elbow had slammed into the curb, bleeding, yet he had only cared about asking if Felix was okay.
Daddy Noah had said that meeting this gentleman was their secret. He couldn't tell Mommy, or she would worry.
So, he had to pretend he didn't know him.
But...
Felix looked at the bandage, his little eyebrows knitting together. His chest felt tight.
"Mister."
The soft, childish voice rang out in the convenience store.
He let go of Clara's hand and took a small step forward.
Clara was surprised.
Felix was usually very wary of strangers, especially someone who looked as fierce as this police officer.
Rhys looked down.
