"I've checked. All flights to Heron Bay today are cancelled. The earliest available is tomorrow afternoon."
"What about the trains?"
"Sold out. And with this weather, there's no guarantee they'll run on schedule anyway."
Simon slumped into his chair, looking like he'd lost all hope in life.
Clara, however, remained calm. "If worst comes to worst, just explain the situation to Mr. Turner. It's force majeure; he should understand. Or maybe you can try a video conference?"
"He considers video calls disrespectful. We lost the last project exactly because of a video meeting." Simon sighed heavily. "Forget it. I'll go back to the counter and see if there are any other options."
He had just stood up when a tall, imposing figure blocked their path.
Rhys had followed them at some point. He was holding two bottles of water and had taken off his tactical jacket, wearing only the black T-shirt underneath.
"Flights cancelled?" he asked.
Clara didn't want to engage. She turned her body to shield Felix, wiping the boy's mouth before adjusting his face mask.
Simon was startled by the sudden appearance. When he realized it was Rhys, his expression turned sour.
He rolled his eyes and snapped, "What's it to you? Shouldn't you be out catching bad guys, Rhys? Or do you have time to hang around listening to airport announcements?"
Rhys ignored Simon's sarcasm, his gaze fixed solely on Clara. "I drove."
Clara's movements paused.
"I have a clearance pass. I can take routes that are closed to the public," Rhys said. "I can drive you to Everton City. There's a major rail hub there; getting back to Heron Bay will be faster from there."
Simon's eyes lit up. He was about to agree, but a glance at Clara's cold expression made him swallow his words.
Clara pulled Felix onto her lap, not even looking up. "No need to trouble yourself, Rhys. We'll figure it out."
Rhys frowned. "In this weather, taxi drivers won't take long-distance fares. And carpooling? You have a child with you. Getting into a stranger's car isn't safe."
"And getting into your car is safe?" Clara shot back. "You're the last person I'd trust."
"..."
Rhys choked on her words.
