The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 269

The stream of traffic ahead finally showed signs of movement.

Rhys let out a long breath, suppressing the burning sensation in his eyes, and restarted the engine.

A moment later, Clara was woken by her phone vibrating. She answered it.

"Hello?"

"Clara, I just got out of surgery. I only saw your message after changing."

The car was quiet, so the man's voice drifted vaguely from the receiver.

"Where are you now? Still at the airport? I'll come get you."

Rhys slowed the car unconsciously.

He knew he shouldn't listen, but his attention drifted to that voice.

Clara said, "Not at the airport. We ran into an acquaintance who's driving us to Everton to catch the train."

There was a second of silence on the other end.

Noah was too smart, and he knew her social circle too well.

In a place like Brighton City, the only "acquaintance" who could get her into a car at this time was him.

"Is it Rhys?" he asked.

Clara didn't hide it, answering candidly, "Yeah, we just happened to run into him."

Noah checked the time. It was definitely too late for him to drive out there now.

"Noah?"

"Yeah, I'm here," he sighed. "I understand. The roads are bad in this weather; it's safer having someone drive you."

Hearing his tone remain normal, Clara smiled and added, "We're just hitching a ride. We'll part ways once we reach Everton."

"Okay. Stay safe," Noah paused. "Text me when you get to the station and when you get home."

"I know. Go get some work done, don't tire yourself out."

Clara hung up and put her phone back in her bag.

Rhys said nothing, asked nothing. He just watched her in the rearview mirror.

Noah really took good care of her.

So good that when she answered his call, her eyes carried a smile and her expression turned gentle.

He couldn't help but wonder, how long had they been together? Felix seemed to like him so much; he must have been with Noah since he was very small.

The car was approaching a service area ramp. Rhys signaled to turn. "The rain's letting up. Let's stop and rest for a bit, get something to eat before we keep going."
