Clara looked at her son.
He was only four, yet he had already learned how to hide things right under her nose, acting first and asking for permission later.
"Why did you write to him?" Clara tried her best to suppress her anger. "Mommy has told you many times, he is a stranger. We can't invite strangers into our home, and we certainly can't give them our address."
"He's not a stranger," Felix argued back. "You and Daddy Simon know him, and he knows you. He gave us a ride, bought us food, and even gave you his umbrella. Besides..."
The little guy paused, his eyes falling on the half-drawn whale on his paper. "I don't know if his wound is healed yet. People who are hurt should eat something sweet, and birthday cake is very sweet."
Clara froze.
An image of Rhys's bandaged hand flashed through her mind.
Why? He had been absent for four years. Why did a bowl of noodles and an umbrella earn him Felix's affection? Drawing a picture wasn't enough; now he wanted to send him an invitation?
A wave of unspeakable bitterness and panic surged in Clara's heart.
"That's his job," she said coldly. "He's a police officer; he helps people. We paid for the ride and the food. Mommy doesn't owe him anything."
"But he looked so sad," Felix whispered in protest. "That day at the station, he was just standing there all alone."
Unmoved, Clara held out her hand to Felix. "Hand it over."
Her tone left no room for negotiation.
Felix pulled the card closer to his chest. "Mommy, I wasn't going to give him our home address. I was just going to mail it to the Brighton City Police Department with his name on it. The mailman would be able to find him."
Quite resourceful, knowing to send it to the police station, she thought.
"How do you know his name?"
Felix hesitated for a moment before confessing, "I heard Daddy Simon say it at the hospital last time..."
Standing to the side, Simon rubbed his nose awkwardly, not daring to make a sound.
Clara had always known her son had a good memory, but she hadn't expected it to be this good.
