Rhys looked up, his voice pleading, "The wind's really strong out there. I'm in pain, dizzy... I can't walk."
Clara's face was cold. "Then lie down, don't move, and wait for the car."
Rhys kept his grip on the hem of her clothes. "For the cat's sake... can't you let me stay one night?"
Just as he spoke, the cat let out a couple of soft meows from upstairs.
She remembered Rhys never used to like small animals. He hated the shedding and the hassle of taking care of them.
And now he was willing to risk his life for one.
"Let go." Clara's voice was still hard, without a hint of softening. Rhys's fingers curled slightly, but not daring to truly anger her, he pursed his lips and slowly let go.
"Just for tonight." Clara smoothed her clothes, took a step back to create distance. "Tomorrow, as soon as the storm stops, you have to leave, whether there's a car or not."
"Okay." He lowered his eyes, hiding the disappointment in them. "Thank you."
Clara turned to get the trash bag. As she passed the staircase, she glanced up.
Felix was sitting quietly on the steps, holding the kitten whose fur had just been blow-dried.
The boy and the cat, both pairs of eyes fixed on the man on the sofa.
He saw the red, raised scars, and his little brow furrowed tightly.
When he saw Clara looking, he lifted a small hand to cover the cat's eyes, then turned and scampered back to his room.
The sound of the door closing echoed in Clara's ears. She didn't dare to think about what might have been hiding in Felix's gaze just now.
Just then, Noah came down after a shower, carrying a light blanket and a pillow.
Even without Clara saying anything, he knew they couldn't just throw the man out in this weather.
"We don't have a spare bed, so you'll have to make do on the sofa for the night."
He tossed the blanket onto the other end of the sofa. "If your fever gets worse tonight, you're probably in for a rough time."
Rhys propped himself up a little. "Sorry for the trouble."
