"Clara." After a moment, Emily Lane couldn't help but ask, "Well, do you want to ask Daniel how Rhys's doing?"
Clara picked up the remote, turned on the TV, and flipped to a random cartoon channel. "What's there to ask? He's a SWAT officer. He's tough. A little fever won't kill him."
"But what if he needs surgery? There's no one there to..."
"Is Daniel not a person?" Clara tilted her head. "With a lawyer like him there, Rhys Huntington will be fine."
Emily wanted to say more, but Clara cut her off with a sharp, "Sit down."
On the screen, Tom the cat was smashed with a frying pan by Jerry the mouse, a large lump swelling on his head. Felix, sitting on his little stool, giggled at the sight.
Clara stared at the screen, her gaze distant.
What did SWAT officers even do?
Her impression of Rhys's job was stuck years in the past.
At first, he would wear a reflective vest, directing traffic at intersections or handling disputes at the DMV. Back then, the worst injuries he sustained were a peeling sunburn on his neck from a summer shift or maybe a punch and a few scratches from a drunk driver.
That was pain you could see, the kind of hurt that a little care could fix.
Later, he was promoted to captain, and his duties became more serious. The most dangerous thing he did was coordinate with detectives to block off roads and lay down spike strips.
But the injuries he had yesterday... they spoke of firefights and explosions.
Rhys's father had died that way. Was he determined to walk the same path?
"Mommy."
A small voice cut through her thoughts.
Clara snapped back to the present. Felix had turned around at some point and was looking at her with a serious expression.
"Daddy Simon taught me that when you're out in the world, you gotta follow the rules," Felix recited the lesson he'd just learned, his words clear and precise. "Good boys own up when they do something wrong, and when someone helps you, you pay them back big time."
Clara shot an annoyed glance at Simon Walker, who was pretending to be engrossed in a magazine. "What is all this nonsense? What has Daddy Simon been teaching you?"
