The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 305

Roadside billboards had been torn to shreds by the wind. The car had to navigate around several flooded sections of road, taking twice as long as usual to reach St. Anne's Hospital.

The emergency room was chaos, filled with people injured from falls, falling debris, and broken glass. Clara's brow furrowed, and she pulled Felix closer to her.

"This way."

Noah led the way, expertly navigating through the infusion area and guiding them deeper into the hospital.

Next to the nurses' station, a row of extra beds had been set up. Clara immediately spotted Daniel sitting in a plastic chair next to a gurney where Rhys was lying.

The bed was too narrow and too short. With his height, his ankles dangled off the end. An IV was taped to the back of his left hand. Lying there in the busy hallway, he looked utterly pathetic.

Daniel, who had been on the phone, hung up when he saw them approaching. His eyes rested on Clara's face for a second before he stepped aside to let them pass.

"You came after all."

Clara looked at Daniel, her gaze cool. She knew Emily wasn't good at keeping secrets; if someone hadn't instructed her otherwise, she never would have been so vague. If Daniel wasn't behind this, Clara would eat her hat.

"We're here to see our benefactor," she replied, her tone flat.

Daniel heard the edge in her voice and didn't dare say more. "The doctor gave him a shot to bring down the fever. He just fell asleep again."

"How bad is it?" Noah stepped forward and picked up the chart hanging at the foot of the bed.

Daniel didn't stop him. In this setting, Noah had a natural authority.

"His white blood cell count is very high. The wound is deeply infected, some anaerobic bacteria," Noah scanned the page. "And the lung infection is pretty bad, too. It looks like an old injury never healed right."

He closed the chart and hung it back in place.

Clara stood a few feet away, her frown deepening with every word.

What did he mean, an old injury?

The commotion made the man on the bed stir, his eyelids fluttering.

Rhys felt as if he'd been thrown into the deep sea, surrounded by crushing pressure. The sounds around him were distant and distorted. With a low groan, he shifted, forcing his eyes open.

It wasn't until the familiar figure came into focus that he became fully alert.
