The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 311

Daniel didn't take a seat. He stood in front of the bookshelf, his eyes scanning the titles of several books on child psychology as he spoke with his back to her.

"Clara, what I'm about to say, I'm saying as Rhys's legal counsel."

Clara frowned.

Without her knowing, Daniel had become Rhys's lawyer.

A sense of being cornered washed over her.

First, Rhys shows up at her door covered in injuries and moves into her living room. Now, Daniel is in her study, switching sides.

She had hidden herself away in Heron Bay, but it seemed the men from Brighton City were all tangled together in an inescapable web.

"Out of professional ethics, there are certain things I shouldn't discuss without my client's authorization. But the situation has changed. You could say I'm trying to secure one last bit of leverage for my client. After all, if a misjudgment is allowed to persist for a lifetime, it's unfair to everyone involved."

Clara looked up at him. "If this is about the children, you can leave. I'll have my lawyer communicate with you. For Emily's sake, and because you've helped me in the past, I won't mention this to her. But that doesn't mean I'm going to sit here and listen to you defend Rhys's innocence."

"It's not about that."

Daniel turned and walked to the desk. "The next question is one I once asked Rhys privately when I was your divorce lawyer. Now, I'd like to hear your answer."

Clara gestured for him to ask.

"To my knowledge, you were in a relationship with Mr. Huntington for three years and married for two. In those five years, did you ever truly know Rhys?"

Clara found the question almost laughable.

"I knew him."

She gave a slight, humorless smile. She didn't even have to think; the familiar habits spilled out on their own.

"He's quiet, doesn't like sweets, he's a light sleeper, hates social events…"

She paused, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "And he has a sister he treasures like she's made of glass, someone no one is allowed to touch."

This was knowledge she had pieced together during countless nights of being neglected.

How much more was there to know? How much deeper could it possibly go?

Daniel listened to her list, his expression shifting subtly.

The answer wasn't surprising. It fit perfectly with the profile he had built of their failed marriage. Yet, for that very reason, he felt a sense of disappointment as an observer.

From her perspective as the victim, these were signs of pain and neglect.
