"But that's what happened."

Claire laughed. "On the scales in your heart, Margot always weighs more than me. You have to take care of her, so I have to give up my husband, letting her use him whenever and wherever she pleases."

She pointed at herself. "And I'm just the 'ordinary person' you remember to placate, if you're not too tired, after you've done everything else."

"No." Rhys took a step forward. "Claire, it's really not like that."

"Then tell me why," Claire said, looking at him. "Give me a reason, even if you have to lie to me."
