The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 329

Noah drove, glancing at the passenger seat out of the corner of his eye.

Rhys was leaning back against the seat with his eyes closed, his breathing a bit heavy, and his brow never relaxed.

"Did you take your medicine?"

"I did," Rhys answered curtly.

"You'd better not let yourself get a fever again. The humid, stuffy weather in Heron Bay isn't good for your lungs either."

Rhys shifted in his seat. "I know my limits."

"Good, as long as you know." Noah turned the steering wheel. "If you actually die in Heron Bay, Felix will be devastated, and it will be a huge problem for Claire."

Rhys finally turned his head to look at Noah. "You lied."

"What are you referring to?"

"At the kindergarten. You deliberately led me to believe that you two were already married."

Noah smiled candidly. "Yes, I lied. Is Mr. Huntington going to arrest me?"

He hit the brakes at a red light and met Rhys's gaze.

"I took advantage of your guilt and your willingness to back down. It wasn't an honorable move, I'll admit. A bit despicable, even. But if I had to do it all over again, I would."

He had no regrets about lying to Claire and Rhys.

Rhys's lips tightened.

"But you, Rhys, have you ever told Claire a single truth?" Noah's smile faded. "You abandoned them."

"I didn't abandon them," Rhys retorted. "I just…"

"You just have a habit of choosing others," Noah cut him off. "I don't understand your warped sense of sacrifice. But by taking care of Margot, you inflicted all that pain on Claire."

The light turned green, and the car behind them honked.

Noah started the car again, not sparing the man beside him another glance.

Rhys couldn't respond.

Because Daniel had said the same thing, and so had Claire.

Everyone could see his sickness, but he was the only one trapped inside, unable to get out.

As they neared their destination, Noah abruptly changed the subject.

"I'll be in Brighton City for the next two weeks. This is your only chance," he said at a measured pace. "You can stay in Heron Bay as long as you want, try to win her back. But I'm betting you won't succeed."

Rhys closed his eyes again.
