The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 37

Rhys probably realized his accusation of "getting all handsy with" was too harsh.

Even though things had been tumultuous lately, he knew Clara.

She was hot-tempered and blunt, but she had never crossed the line on matters of principle.

Even if they were divorcing, she would handle all the paperwork clearly and walk away with her head held high to find someone else. She would never cheat within the marriage.

He was just anxious.

He pursed his lips and added, "My tone was bad."

If this were two months ago, Clara would have pouted and asked for a hug and a kiss.

But now, Clara just lowered her eyes and gave a faint "Mmh."

Rhys's gaze fell on her hand pressing against her stomach, and he frowned.

"I'll take you to the hospital for a full checkup tomorrow. Stomach issues aren't something to take lightly. Stop being stubborn."

"No."

"Stop playing games with your health."

Clara tutted. "Captain Huntington, I value my life very much. I need to stay alive so I can sign the divorce papers."

Rhys's gaze turned cool. "Do you have anything to say to me other than divorce?"

Clara asked him, "What do you want to talk about?"

"There's a lot going on at the precinct lately, and I don't have much time to look after the house. With your health the way it is, I'm not comfortable leaving you alone."

"So?"

"Since you don't want to go to the hospital, let's change the place."

"Where?"

"Go back to Grandpa's estate. There are servants there, and Jenny's cooking suits your taste. Aunt Mia is there too. Having someone to keep you company is better than eating takeout alone at home."

The Huntington family estate was a large, traditional manor halfway up the mountain on the south side of the city.

It was a place countless people in Brighton City fought to visit.

Clara had gone back often with Rhys, but usually only for a meal.

Actually, she had chosen this apartment because the location was perfect.

It was close to his work place, convenient for his commute; close to the shopping district for her; close to her parents' home so she could bum meals.

But she had calculated everything except one thing.

It was also dangerously close to his mother, Veronica West's home.

He was running around for Margot. If Clara bumped into them one day, or if the media snapped a photo, it would be troublesome.

Dumping her at his grandpa's place let him play the role of the "considerate husband," all while freeing him up to devote his undivided attention to his precious sweetheart. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

The more Clara thought about it, the angrier she got. In the end, only desolation and self-mockery remained.

Rhys was angry too.

Although Grandpa's estate had a lot of rules, the environment was serene, the medical team was on call, and there were people to take care of her. It really was suitable for recovery.

Besides, he really was very busy.

"Drama queen."
