The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 44

The wedding ring was gone.

Frowning, Rhys stood up, used his phone as a flashlight, and began rummaging through the small suitcase Clara had brought. From the lining to the toiletry bag, to her purse, and finally the pockets of her clothes. Nothing.

He had assumed she was just throwing a tantrum, acting out. He hadn't expected her to actually take off the wedding ring. He had no idea which corner she had thrown it into.

Feeling frustrated, Rhys turned off the flashlight, walked back to the bed, bent down, and bit Clara on the cheek.

Clara woke with a start from the pain. Before her brain could process what was happening, her body reacted instinctively. Without thinking, she swung her hand and slapped him.

The slap stunned Rhys, and it stunned her too. She was wide awake now.

Looking at the bewildered face of the man in front of her, Clara's heart skipped a beat, panic setting in. The first thought that flashed through her mind was: "I'm done for. I just assaulted a police officer."

She decided to strike first verbally. "...Why aren't you sleeping in the middle of the night? Are you a dog? Biting people randomly?"

Rhys touched the spot where she had hit him, his brow furrowing slightly. "You hit hard."

Honestly, Clara would rather he got angry. She would rather he coldly told her to get out than see this bottomless tolerance. Because he was like this with Margot, too—perhaps even more so.

"You bit me first," Clara looked away. "That was self-defense."

"Fine, my fault." Rhys sighed, not dwelling on the issue. "Where is the ring?"
