Margot's gaze immediately landed on Clara's left hand.
"Clara, did you lose your wedding ring?"
Old Mr. Huntington's brow furrowed instantly.
In a family like the Huntingtons, who prized tradition and propriety above all else, losing a wedding ring was seen as a mark of disrespect toward the marriage—an ominous sign.
Wendy, standing nearby, twisted the knife with a soft, feigned concern. "Oh my, how could you be so careless? That ring was custom engraved. It's the only pair like it in the world."
Clara lost her appetite.
The room was full of people. Aside from Rhys, who was blind as a bat, everyone else was a headache.
"Yes, I lost it," Clara said indifferently. "Perhaps my fate with that ring has simply run its course."
She couldn't even keep the man; why would she care about a useless metal loop?
"Don't talk nonsense."
Rhys frowned and covered her hand with his. "If it's lost, we'll buy a better one. The old style was dated anyway. As for fate, we make our own."
Margot watched their joined hands, a flicker of emotion passing through her eyes before she quickly masked it.
She set down her teacup and suggested, "Since you're buying a new one, why don't I join you? Clara has... unique taste, but it might not always suit the formal occasions the Huntington family attends. I can help offer a second opinion."
Mia's smile faded.
Suggesting the actual wife had bad taste and offering to help pick out a wedding ring right in front of her face? Margot was certainly making herself at home.
Rhys hesitated. It was true that in the past, Clara chose things based solely on personal preference, ignoring protocol.
Seeing his hesitation, Clara pulled her hand out from under his and spoke coldly, "No need. It's just buying a ring; we don't need a search party. Besides, Miss Johnson, your health is delicate. You should stay home and rest. I'd hate for you to tire yourself out and faint in the middle of the mall, forcing Rhys to carry you back and nurse you. It's too much trouble."
She shot a glance at Margot. "I'm a petty person. I can tolerate seeing things online, but I can't stomach watching my husband hold another woman in front of my face."
Margot's face went pale. she bit her lower lip and looked at Rhys. "If you think I'd be in the way, then I won't go."
