But she didn't know any of that.
All she knew was shares, assets, and market value.
“Ms. West, you have the cause and effect backward. It wasn't that I said something to him that made him give me everything. It's that he, as an adult with the capacity for independent thought, made the decision himself.”
Veronica West sneered. “Coming back at a time like this with a child, are you telling me you weren't after a piece of the Huntington family pie?”
“If you think he’s the kind of man who can be tricked out of his entire fortune with a few sweet words, then how come you haven't managed to get those shares from him in the past four years?”
Veronica West was speechless.
“You…”
But she couldn't think of what should follow that “you.”
Clara continued, “Back when you were planning to remarry, Grandpa Huntington gave you Rhys's portion of the shares, allowing you to enter the Johnson family with a substantial fortune. That was the dignity an old father, who had lost his own son, afforded you.”
“For all these years, you’ve enjoyed the enormous dividends from the Huntington family shares, solidifying your position in the Johnson family. Now, the moment the patriarch passes, you rush over to find your son, trying to take away the last little bit he has left.”
Clara was genuinely puzzled.
“Mrs. West, don't you think this is all a bit inappropriate?”
Veronica West’s fingers trembled with rage. She took a step forward in her high heels, raising her hand to grab Clara’s wrist.
“What right do you have to say these things!”
But before she could even touch Clara’s sleeve, Rhys had already stepped sideways, shielding Clara with his body.
“If you try to lay a hand on her, I’m calling the police,” Rhys said coldly. “What Clara just said is exactly what I wanted to say. Don't ever come here again.”
Veronica West looked up in disbelief. “Rhys, are you really disowning your own mother for this woman?”
Rhys was silent for a moment, then he smiled.
“It’s not me disowning you. It’s you who never wanted me in the first place.”
Veronica West froze.
“This is the last time I will tolerate you causing a scene at my doorstep.” Rhys didn’t look at her again, issuing a direct order for her to leave. “If you ever disturb my family again, I won't hesitate to use certain measures to turn those shares you're holding into worthless paper. You should know I can do it.”
