Rhys didn't look up, his expression neutral as he tapped a main intersection on the digital map. "Readjust this intersection by two this afternoon. Run through the contingency plan again."
"Understood, Director Huntington," his deputy replied, snapping back to attention and jotting it down.
It was noon.
Clara appeared in the command center's break room, carrying an insulated lunch bag.
Rhys had just walked out and spotted her from down the hall.
He had been on his way to lunch with his colleagues, but he casually shoved his folders into his deputy's arms, leaving the group behind.
He strode over, smoothly taking the lunch bag from her hands. "Why did you come all the way out here? I thought you were grabbing lunch with Emily?"
"Daniel is home, and I didn't want to be a third wheel. Besides, I figured I'd come supervise Director Huntington's lunch." Clara studied his face as she followed him into his office.
As they walked down the corridor, a dozen pairs of eyes tracked their every move.
The last time she dropped off his food, half the command center had found excuses to walk past his door to catch a glimpse of her. Now, with the massive scandal hitting the Johnson family, everyone's curiosity was at an absolute peak.
Rhys shot them a warning glare, and the onlookers immediately scattered.
He shut his office door. Clara pulled the food containers out one by one, setting them out on the coffee table.
Rhys sat on the couch, pulling her down onto his lap before taking the silverware she handed him.
"You saw the news?" he asked casually.
"Yeah, it's trending everywhere. It's hard to miss." Clara looked up at him. "Are you okay?"
Rhys chuckled.
"I'm perfectly fine." He set the fork down and pulled her closer, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist. "I just think this day took way too long to arrive."
A wave of relief washed over Clara.
When the mighty fall, everyone scrambles for cover or lines up to kick them while they are down.
Why should she suffer?
She had always turned a blind eye to Eric's shady deals, happily reaping the benefits without ever getting her own hands dirty.
The worst fallout she faced personally was a few days of questioning by the authorities, cooperating with the investigation, and then watching helplessly as millions of dollars in assets were seized.
She wouldn't go to prison, but the humiliation was a bitter pill to swallow.
If Margot hadn't insisted on messing with Owen, Owen would never have been arrested. His family wouldn't have thrown Eric under the bus to save themselves, dragging all those dirty ledgers into the light!
Veronica stood up and marched toward the second floor.
She pushed the bedroom door open without knocking.
The curtains were half-drawn. An open suitcase sat by the bed, clothes haphazardly piled inside.
"Where exactly do you think you're going?"
