The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 565

He ripped the medical tape off the back of his hand, his brow furrowed in a tight knot.

Clara had cried.

She cried downstairs while accompanying Emily for her check-up, and then she came back and pretended nothing had happened right in front of him.

Was there a problem with Emily's baby?

If there was, Emily would have called Daniel in tears ages ago.

The only things capable of making Clara wear an expression like that had to involve either him or Felix.

Felix was perfectly fine at kindergarten, so who exactly was the problem?

A sharp stab of pain echoed through Rhys's chest.

He waited a moment for it to pass, then dialed Daniel's number.

The phone rang twice before it was answered.

"Hello? What's up?"

Rhys skipped the pleasantries and cut straight to the chase. "Emily came in for her check-up today, and Clara went with her. When they came back to the room just now, Clara had been crying, and Emily was covering for her. When you get home, test the waters with Emily for me."

There was a one-second pause on the other end of the line.

"What do you suspect?"

"I don't know."

Rhys sighed, feeling like a useless cripple.

Lying in this hospital bed, he couldn't even figure out why his own wife was crying.

"Did a doctor pull Clara aside today to tell her something about my condition, or... did something happen to her?"

Daniel replied over the phone, "Understood. Leave it to me. Don't let your imagination run wild and mess up your mood."

"Yeah."

Hanging up the phone, Rhys stared at the ceiling and draped his arm over his eyes.

That indescribable sensation of weightlessness tightly gripped him once again.

At seven o'clock that evening, Daniel finished a full day in court and pushed open his front door.

Emily was curled up on the sofa. The TV was on, playing some random variety show at a low volume. She was hugging a throw pillow, resting her chin on it, staring blankly into space.

Her face practically had "I'm hiding something" written all over it.

Daniel loosened his tie and sat down in the armchair.

"Oh?" Daniel tapped the armrest twice. "If you and the baby are fine, then the one in trouble is Clara."

He tilted his head slightly. "What happened to her?"

Emily choked, her face flushing crimson.

How did she get manipulated into a trap by this cunning fox so easily?!

Emily cursed herself eight hundred times in her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

She stammered her defense.

Her eyes darted from the coffee table to the TV, from the TV to the curtains, from the curtains to the crumpled blanket, refusing to look Daniel in the eye.

"What could possibly be wrong with Clara? She's just exhausted from taking care of Rhys! Do you have any idea how hard she works every day? Dropping Felix off at school in the morning, going to the hospital, picking Felix up in the afternoon, and dealing with company business at night. She has absolutely zero time for herself all day! Who wouldn't break down? She's just exhausted and cried a little, what's the big deal!"

Daniel listened quietly until she finished. He stood up, walked over to her, and looked down with lowered eyes.

"Emily."

"...What?"

"Rhys's current physical condition can't handle any shocks. If something happened to Clara and he was kept in the dark, the moment it all blows up, the consequence might be him dying right there in his hospital room. Are you sure you want to help her carry that responsibility?"
