The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 596

Alex was snacking on some chips nearby until Emily snatched half the bag away from him.

The sounds inside the house overlapped.

Laughter, bickering, the pitter-patter of Felix running around, and the clatter of Clara's mom checking the pots in the kitchen.

As Rhys watched and listened, his back slowly began to stiffen.

The more he stared at Clara's radiantly smiling face, the more panicked he felt.

For over a month in the hospital, Clara had stayed by his side every single day, keeping him warm and taking care of his every need. But there was exactly one topic she absolutely refused to bring up.

The letter he had entrusted to Daniel before going into the operating room.

Since Clara didn't bring it up, Rhys was far too terrified to ask.

He originally thought that as long as he survived, the whole thing would just be water under the bridge. His incisions were healing, he was home, so naturally, the letter was just a piece of scrap paper now.

But looking at Clara's peaceful, untroubled expression, his premonition of a looming reckoning grew stronger by the second.

Rhys swallowed hard against a dry throat, his peripheral vision locking onto Daniel.

While Clara and Emily were busy gossiping with Noah about Miss Linden, Rhys quietly got up, walked over to Daniel, and nudged him with his elbow.

"A word in private."

Daniel shot him a look, set down his glass, and smoothly stood up.

Rhys practically dragged the man out onto the balcony, sliding the glass door shut behind them.

The summer heat radiated through the air, turning the balcony railing searing hot. The potted pothos plants Clara's mom had been tending were thriving, their leaves practically dripping with green vibrancy.

Rhys took a deep breath. "Let me ask you, the night I went into surgery... that envelope, did you give it to her?"

Daniel raised an eyebrow, his tone flat. "Of course. As your proxy lawyer, honoring our contract is my bottom line. Your surgery took over ten hours. Following the trigger conditions you set, I handed the envelope to Clara in front of everyone."

"The letter, The Final Will and Testament, and the terms for your post-mortem arrangements—the reading process was compliant, witnesses were present, and records were fully complete. As your entrusted lawyer, I guarantee that the entire execution strictly followed legal procedures and your personal written authorization."

Rhys's scalp tingled, and a layer of cold sweat immediately broke out across his back.

He had banked on the wild hope that Daniel might have held off if the timing felt wrong.

Now, even that last shred of luck was gone.

The client thoroughly regretted hiring such a dedicated lawyer in the first place.

He should have found someone a little lazier.

"Did she read it? What was her reaction?"

"Every single word," Daniel said, clearly enjoying the drama. "She took that heartfelt letter of yours and read it from beginning to end."

"And then?"

"Then she tore it to shreds."
