The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 64

Strangely, the part of her heart that had been suspended in anxiety seemed to die completely.

It didn't hurt. It just felt incredibly empty.

"Why did you lie to me?"

Rhys sighed. "Why do you think?"

Clara understood. He thought she would make a scene.

Tell a lie, and if she believed it, there would be peace.

"When was she here?"

"The day before yesterday," Rhys explained. "She came to the precinct to bring me something, slipped on the way, and fell. Her clothes got wet. The precinct is full of men, so it wasn't convenient, so I brought her back here to clean up."

Clara stared into his eyes. "What kind of cleaning up requires brushing her teeth here? Did she fall on her teeth? Or did she just happen to spend the night?"

"She has a habit of brushing after meals. You know that."

"Should I know that?" Clara took a step closer. "So you ate here, she felt uncomfortable, and you went out specifically to buy her a toothbrush?"

"It was just convenient."

Rhys found her unreasonable. "It was left there after she used it; I didn't pay attention. Is this worth you getting so worked up?"

"Didn't pay attention" again.

Every unreasonable action, once attached to the name "Margot," became perfectly justified in his eyes.

"Didn't pay attention..." Clara murmured the repetition. "If I left another man's underwear in our bed and told you I 'didn't pay attention,' would that be okay?"

"Cut the crap," Rhys said, his voice going cold. "Don't you dare lump her in with that trash. Clara, can't you keep your thoughts clean for once?"

Clara laughed in anger. "Fine, I'm dirty, and you two are pure. Then why bring her back behind my back?"

"This house is mine. Do I not even have the right to bring a relative home?"
