The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 68

Someone tugged at Emily's sleeve, but she shook them off. "What? Men have special jobs, sometimes they have to provide warmth to other women, right?"

Everyone knew that Clara had pursued Rhys relentlessly back in the day. Emily bringing this up was clearly an attempt to embarrass her.

"Emily, save it," Dylan said awkwardly. "Clara is right here."

"What did I say? I'm just praising Captain Huntington for his dedication."

Clara's expression didn't change. She raised her hand and sighed, "It's true. He's so busy he's never home, so he just makes up for it with money."

Emily frowned. "Makes up for what?"

"Guilt, obviously."

Clara extended her hand further into the light. "He dragged me out just the other day to buy this. I had no choice. Aside from giving me money, he really can't provide any emotional value."

The diamond faced Emily directly, practically flashing into her eyes.

Emily wasn't naive; she recognized immediately that it was a Céris piece. It cost a fortune.

Clara sighed. "Unlike your boyfriend. I heard he works under you? He must be so obedient, able to keep you company every day, right?"

Emily's expression changed.

Her boyfriend worked at her family's company. He was young, obedient, and handsome, but ultimately had no money or real talent, relying on her connections to get a manager position.

"Some people are just sour grapes because they can't reach the vine," Simon added from the side, peeling a mandarin orange and handing it to Clara.

"Clara has money and time. Captain Huntington is busy earning the Huntington family dividends while she counts the cash. Why would she care if he's out there saving lives?"

Emily scoffed coldly. "That must be hard."

Simon raised an eyebrow. "Miss Lane, don't be bitter. I saw you dragging that little assistant of yours around at the mall last time. What drama was that?"

Emily slammed her cup onto the table. "Simon, is that any of your business?"
