The feed has barely gone dark when the message arrives, clean and formal and unmistakably deliberate, and I know before I open it that this is not a request, because institutions do not ask after they lose control, they reclaim.
Sally sees it at the same time I do, her tablet chiming softly as she exhales through her nose and lifts her eyes to mine. “They’re summoning you.”
“Of course they are,” I reply, and I set my own tablet down slowly, because the temptation to move too fast feels like a trap of its own.
Ben straightens near the door, his posture alert but restrained, and I can feel his attention sharpen even without looking at him, because the room has shifted again, not into chaos but into intent.
“When,” he asks.
“Now,” Sally answers, already scrolling. “Immediate appearance. Full council chamber.”
“And who else,” Ben asks.
Sally’s mouth tightens. “Just her.”
That lands heavier than the summons itself, because exclusion is never accidental, and my wolf presses closer under my ribs as instinct recognizes isolation for what it is.
I breathe in slowly, grounding myself in the familiar pattern, filling my lungs and releasing it just as deliberately, because routine steadies my hands even when the ground is moving.
“They want a performance,” I say quietly. “Not a conversation.”
Ben steps closer. “Then you don’t go alone.”
I finally look at him, really look, and shake my head once. “That’s exactly what they want me to do. If you walk in with me, they frame it as influence instead of testimony.”
“And if you walk in without me,” he counters, “they frame it as weakness.”
“Yes,” I agree. “Either way, they frame it.”
Sally clears her throat softly. “The chamber is configured for recording.”
Ben’s jaw tightens. “Public.”
“Internal public,” she corrects. “Which means it will leak.”
I nod once, because nothing stays sealed once it touches fear.
“Give me five minutes,” I say.
