“And you thought exile would break him.”
“Yes.”
It did not.
The bond hums steady and cold.
“You underestimated ambition,” I say.
He meets my gaze without flinching.
“Yes.”
The admission sits heavy between us.
“We do not underestimate him again,” I say.
“No.”
Later, when the command room clears, I step onto the balcony and let the night air cool the heat still coiled under my skin. The valley lies dark beyond the trees, and somewhere past the ridge, Varik regroups under whatever temporary structure he calls command.
“He wanted us weakened,” Landon says quietly behind me.
“Yes.”
“He miscalculated.”
“Partially.”
The bond pulses faintly.
“He saw unity,” I continue. “But he also saw cost.”
We bled.
Even if lightly.
“He will increase pressure,” Landon says.
“Yes.”
The third faction did not retreat in defeat.
They withdrew in evaluation.
Morning arrives too quickly, and with it, a runner from the northern ridge.
“Scouts report movement beyond ridge,” he says. “Not direct approach. Perimeter scouting.”
Varik is not retreating.
He is circling.
I move to the map immediately.
“He is mapping our repositioning,” I say.
“Yes,” Layla replies.
“He will test outermost layer first,” Elias adds.
The bond hums steady and analytical.
“Then we alter pattern,” I reply.
“How,” West Ridge’s Alpha asks.
“We do not respond directly to ridge scouting,” I say. “We reinforce east quietly.”
“Shift expectation,” Landon says.
“Yes.”
We spend the next hour recalibrating patrol arcs, adjusting rotation intervals, and staggering visibility intentionally.
By midday, reports confirm that Varik’s outer scouts attempt to draw northern units outward, but our eastern reinforcement catches a secondary push before it fully forms, forcing his forces to retreat prematurely.
“He did not expect misdirection,” Layla says quietly.
“No.”
“He expected retaliation.”
“Yes.”
Varik thinks in dominance arcs.
He expects reaction.
We give him unpredictability.
The bond pulses steady and resolute.
But unpredictability is not enough.
He will escalate again.
By late afternoon, another report arrives, sharper this time.
“Varik’s Beta sighted closer than before,” the runner says. “Testing outer watch posts directly.”
“He is increasing proximity,” Landon says.
“Yes.”
“He wants visible confrontation.”
“He wants morale disruption,” I reply.
Elias studies the map carefully.
“He will attempt symbolic victory,” he says. “Not full breach. A targeted strike.”
The words land heavy.
“What target,” I ask.
