Inside the tight confines of the car, the air grew thick and heavy with tension.

Claire's pale, slender fingers tugged gently at his tie, winding it loop by loop, while her fingertips 'accidentally' brushed against the man's Adam's apple.

Miles's expression remained completely unreadable. He methodically pried her soft, delicate fingers away, one by one. The force wasn't painful, but it was absolutely uncompromising.

He pulled his tie back, his voice incredibly steady and utterly devoid of emotion.

"No."

"I don't believe you."

Miles let out a breathless, exasperated laugh at her unyielding stubbornness.

"If you don't believe me, why ask?"

"Because I want to hear you say it yourself," she leaned in, her warm breath brushing against his ear. "Say that you like me, that you love me, that you can't live without me."

Claire's eyes curved upward in a flirtatious tilt.

"But Dr. Zimmerman, you aren't cute at all when you lie."

Miles ignored her completely. The car drove smoothly into Grandview Heights.

At the door of apartment 501, he punched in the code. Pushing the door open, he stepped aside, motioning for Claire to go in.

She stood in the doorway, refusing to budge.

Her eyes shimmered with feigned innocence as she dragged out her words.

"Dr. Zimmerman, it's so late. We're just friends. Don't you think it's a little inappropriate for me to come inside?"

He claimed he didn't like her, yet here he was inviting her into his home in the dead of night. He was completely contradicting himself.

Miles sighed, sounding utterly exasperated.

"You're overthinking it. I told you to come in so you could take your things."

"When you moved out last time, you didn't clean up properly."

Claire choked on a breath, glaring daggers at him. She gritted her teeth.

"Then please do me a favor and throw it away for me, Dr. Zimmerman!"

"Throw it away yourself." He turned and walked into the apartment.

Claire kicked off her high heels and stepped onto the cold hardwood floor barefoot.

"What did I even leave?"

The man was already at the door of his study and didn't even bother turning his head.

"Guest room. On the bed. Lingerie."

Claire was speechless.

The last time she had sneaked in to pack up in the middle of the night, she had been so panicked that she entirely forgot such a private piece of clothing.
