She had always been the one initiating, but feeling the hard, undeniable evidence of Miles's arousal pressed against her made a spike of genuine panic shoot through her veins.
Amidst the friction, the top two buttons of his shirt came undone.
The flashlight had rolled out of his hand, throwing a skewed beam against the ceiling that cast a fractured, cinematic glow over their tangled bodies.
"Miles..."
Claire whispered his name, the sound unbearably sweet and fragile.
"Yeah."
He let out a rough murmur, trailing his lips from her mouth to her jawline, pressing open-mouthed kisses down her neck.
Claire lay there completely overwhelmed, her mind totally blank as his hands scorched a trail up her waist.
She let out a soft gasp.
Just as she thought they were going over the edge.
The man hovering above her suddenly froze.
He braced his arms on either side of her head, his dark eyes a stormy sea of warring emotions.
Claire blinked up at him in a daze.
"Miles?" she whispered, still drunk on the heavy, unresolved tension.
"Are you... stopping?"
"Claire, you..."
He squeezed his eyes shut, his chest heaving with heavy pants, refusing to hold her innocent teasing against her right now.
It took a long, agonizing minute of heavy breathing for him to finally rein it in.
"No." His voice was cold, hoarse steel. He rolled off her and sat on the edge of the bed, though his gaze remained predatory and dark.
"What?" Claire was completely lost.
Miles clenched his jaw and bit out three words.
"I don't have protection."
...
Claire blurted out the first thing that came to mind: "I can go buy some."
She was bold, but her heart was hammering wildly against her ribs.
Miles's Adam's apple bobbed as a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead, landing right between her collarbones.
"There isn't a store for miles."
Claire pouted, genuinely disappointed. She had been thoroughly enjoying the sight of the untouchable stoic losing his damn mind over her, completely dethroned from his pedestal.
"Miles." She poked a finger at his rock-hard abs.
"Are you in a lot of pain?"
