Claire stood by the car, lightly biting her red lip. "Then it's a promise."
"I won't bother going to the class reunion at the Royal Imperial Hotel tonight."
She leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a sultry whisper. "I should go home and properly prepare myself for the doctor's... payback."
Miles smirked, utterly helpless against her charm and hopelessly devoted.
"If you already RSVP'd, you should go. I actually have a dinner at the Royal Imperial tonight too. I'll pick you up after I finish at the hospital, and we can head over together."
Claire's eyes lit up, quickly agreeing, "Okay, I'll wait for you."
After they parted ways, Claire went straight back into the boutique to manage pending orders. She worked tirelessly until dusk.
Just as she stretched her aching back, the front door chimed open.
Yvonne stood in the doorway, dripping in Louis Vuitton haute couture and sporting flawless makeup. Her sharp, calculating gaze swept the room before locking onto Claire.
She marched forward, her voice laced with desperate urgency. "Claire, has Jefferson been here? It's been all day. He's not answering my calls or my texts."
She bit her lip, feigning helplessness. "The design department's contracts are waiting for his signature, otherwise I wouldn't be bothering you here."
Yvonne's tone was pitiful, but her aggressive eyes continued to scan the boutique, hunting for any trace that Jefferson had visited.
Claire raised an eyebrow, finding the whole charade utterly laughable.
"Are you lost, Yvonne? Why would your fiancé be at my shop?"
Yvonne immediately pivoted to playing the victim. "Claire, I know you and Jefferson have a past. Honestly, I shouldn't even hold it against you."
"But he and I are engaged now. We're getting our marriage license soon, and..."
She pressed her lips together. "We've already slept together. So, can you please stop seeing him?"
Her eyes grew red with manufactured tears. "He loves me now. Please stop clinging to him. Just let him go, okay?"
Claire leaned against the edge of her cutting table, quietly watching the melodramatic performance. When Yvonne finally finished, Claire let out a sharp laugh.
Her voice wasn't loud, but every syllable cut like glass.
