Miles pocketed his phone seamlessly, stood up, and left through the back doors of the conference room before the director could even finish his speech.
Sitting in the front row, Vivian Langford turned around instantly. Her eyes locked onto his retreating figure as a wave of irritation settled in her chest.
There was no one in Miles's office. Claire stood by the door waiting, holding a paper bag containing the shirt she had made by hand.
A gentle but scrutinizing voice sounded from behind her.
"Excuse me, who are you looking for? Can I help you?"
Claire turned around to see a female doctor in a white coat.
She replied politely, "I'm waiting for Dr. Zimmerman."
"Oh, looking for Dr. Zimmerman," Vivian dragged out her words. "Are you here for a consultation? He's extremely busy. Just at lunch today, when we were eating together, he mentioned how much he hates being bothered by non-patients."
She deliberately emphasized the word "together," making it incredibly clear that she was marking her territory.
"I'm not here as a patient, but..."
Claire's explanation was abruptly cut off by Vivian.
"Since you aren't a patient, don't just stand here like a lovesick groupie. You're getting in the way of people who actually need care and wasting public resources."
Claire's brow furrowed slightly, instantly catching the hostility radiating from the woman.
Was she one of Miles's admirers?
Out of respect for the white coat the woman wore, Claire swallowed her temper and continued to explain calmly.
"Dr. Zimmerman and I are friends..."
Vivian looked Claire up and down with obvious disdain.
"Dr. Zimmerman doesn't have time to be friends with women who have ulterior motives. Miss, I suggest you do yourself a favor and leave."
"You misunderstand, Vivian." Miles stepped closer, interrupting her. "She's here to see me. And considering my shift is over, this hardly counts as wasting hospital resources."
Miles wasn't wearing his white coat. He was dressed in a dark gray shirt and a black overcoat, radiating an effortlessly elegant aura.
