The next second, the door swung open, and a boisterous crowd surged inside.
"Miles, you didn't reply to my text, but everyone insisted on coming over to thank you," Jared Johnston announced. "So I just brought them all up."
Behind him trailed a group of young doctors who had volunteered at the Westhaven Village clinic.
"Wow, your place is huge, Dr. Zimmerman!"
The cheerful voices abruptly died down.
Everyone froze at the entryway, staring at the scene in the living room in stunned silence.
Miles held one of Claire's arms gently in his grasp. The man who was notoriously aloof and unapproachable at the hospital was currently crouched right in front of her.
Vivian Langford's smile froze on her face. Her knuckles turned white as she clutched a plastic grocery bag, her eyes locked on the exclusive pair of women's slippers on Claire's feet.
The silence was deafening.
Jared recovered first, letting out a laugh. "Ah, so this is Miles's lifesaver."
Claire immediately adjusted her clothes and stood up, putting a polite distance between herself and Miles.
"Dr. Zimmerman was just helping me change my dressing," she offered.
She loved teasing him, but she didn't want his colleagues getting the wrong idea about his professionalism.
"Ms. Jenner, long time no see," an intern, who had previously enjoyed her soup, greeted her with a warm smile.
"Don't just stand there, guys. Weren't we going to have hotpot? Come on in," Vivian said, opening the shoe cabinet and handing out slippers, clearly trying to play the hostess.
Several colleagues snapped out of it, changed their shoes, and carried the groceries toward the kitchen.
Claire stood up. "I'll help you."
"Your arm isn't fully healed..." Miles started to object.
