Alistair Zimmerman's Jubilee banquet had its main table positioned right in the center, offering an excellent view of the entire room.

But it also drew the scrutinizing gazes of everyone present.

Claire leaned in slightly. "Dr. Zimmerman, is it really appropriate for me to sit here? I should probably move to the back."

She tried to stand, but Miles stopped her.

"Sit down."

He pulled her back, his fingers wrapping around her wrist. The grip wasn't heavy, and he added in a low voice.

"Toby likes you. If you sit here, he'll behave."

Toby shook his head and huffed. "I'm always a good boy. Uncle Miles just wants to sit close to Goddess Claire and is using me as an excuse."

Claire's cheeks warmed.

Miles didn't deny it. He simply raised a hand and lightly tapped the little boy's forehead. "You talk too much."

From behind the folding screen, Alistair stepped out.

The banquet hall instantly fell silent.

He wore a dark red tailored suit, his gaze sharp and commanding respect without needing to say a word.

Alistair scanned the room. When his eyes swept over Claire, he paused for a fraction of a second before withdrawing his gaze and taking his seat calmly.

Nearby, the eldest son of the Zimmerman family and Yvonne's father, Victor Zimmerman, suddenly spoke up.

"Miles, today is Dad's birthday. The seats at the main table were arranged in advance. Who is this guest you brought?"

Victor's gaze landed on Claire, carrying a hint of scrutiny and displeasure.

His own daughter, Yvonne, hadn't even secured a seat at the main table, yet this random young woman had?

"This young lady looks inexperienced, so it's understandable if she doesn't know the rules. But Miles, how could you be so oblivious?"

The atmosphere at the table instantly froze.

Claire knew perfectly well that this middle-aged man wasn't targeting her; he was blatantly going after Miles.

And she had simply become his convenient excuse.

"Mr. Zimmerman, I overstepped. It has nothing to do with Miles."

Just as she was about to get up and leave, Alistair stopped her.
