Claire had no time to entertain her half-sister, who was only five years younger than her.
She didn't even bat an eye, fixing her stare dead on George.
He sat in the center seat of the sofa, idly rolling two slick, polished walnuts in his palm. Fleshy and smoking a cigarette, he radiated the vulgar aura of newly acquired wealth.
Seeing Claire, he scoffed loudly through his nose.
"So you finally remember your way home?" he growled. "I thought you died in a ditch somewhere."
"George, don't say that. She finally came to visit," Meredith Vance cooed as she descended the stairs, heavily made-up and impeccably maintained.
She used to be Susan's best friend. When Meredith had hit rock bottom, her kind-hearted mother took her in, only to get a knife in the back for her troubles.
"Claire, how is Susan's health? When you called to borrow money a while ago, we truly didn't have much to spare."
Claire's throat tightened. The sheer disgust was suffocating; every breath in this house felt toxic.
"Cut the act. It's pathetic," she stated coldly, standing before the three of them. "I'm only going to say this once today."
"George, stay away from my mother from now on. Don't you dare try your despicable blackmail on her again."
"I kept all the receipts. If you touch her again, I'll take you down with me!"
Her words were chillingly clear, dripping with ice.
"You've lost your damn mind! You screw around for a few years and suddenly think you run the show?"
George didn't lose his temper; he merely let out a mocking sneer.
"Take me down with you? Fine, but the first one to croak will be that miserable old hag, Susan."
He lifted his heavy eyelids, shooting her a sideways, venomous glare.
"Let me remind you, I am legally your mother's sole guardian. Without my signature, what hospital would dare operate on her?"
"And about that kidney donor—do you really want to test me? I'll dig up the donor's identity and plaster it all over the internet. Let's see if they still want to give your mother a kidney then!"
He leaned back into the plush leather. "I'd love to see how much longer your mother can hold on."
