Late that night.
Claire lay motionless in bed. In the pitch-black room, the pale glow of her phone screen illuminated her face. She was staring at Jared's latest Instagram post.
It was a photo of Miles's hand resting next to a box of artisan cupcakes.
It had to be from the model.
Claire locked her phone, plunging the room back into absolute darkness, and stared blankly at the ceiling.
Her chest ached, but it wasn't the agonizing, world-ending pain she expected.
If the billionaire heir wanted to play games, she was officially tapping out...
By morning, the storm had passed.
Claire layered concealer over the dark circles under her eyes and headed to Central General Hospital to visit Susan.
Her mother was sitting up, eating breakfast. She looked significantly better and far more stable.
"Claire, sweetie, did you not sleep well? You look exhausted."
"I just stayed up late finishing a design draft, I'm fine. How are you feeling? Any pain?"
Susan gently patted her daughter's hand, her eyes full of affection. "It's all thanks to Dr. Zimmerman. He's been taking such good care of me and keeping my spirits up. Once this surgery is over, we absolutely have to invite him to the house for a nice dinner to properly thank him."
Claire paused mid-pour, nearly spilling hot water over her hand.
She immediately rejected the idea. "Mom, Dr. Zimmerman is incredibly busy. We shouldn't bother him."
"No matter how busy I am, I can always make time for Susan's invitations."
A deep, chilling voice echoed from the doorway.
It was Miles, doing his morning rounds.
His eyes swept past Claire as if she didn't exist. When he looked at Susan, his demeanor shifted to pure, comforting professionalism. "Your test results are looking fantastic, Susan. You're fully cleared for surgery next week. Just focus on resting."
"Thank goodness. Claire and I owe you our lives... By the way, how is the arm injury you got when you saved me?"
Claire's gaze instinctively dropped to his left arm.
He offered a reassuring smile. "It's nothing to worry about. It's completely healed. I'll check on my next patient now."
