I watch as my father helps lead Jude away. He’s not steady on his feet, so I know the blood loss was significant.

“Sphinx, call Hijack and then I want you to walk me through what you saw,” Raptor says.

I nod, pulling out my phone and calling Hijack.

“Hey beautiful, what can I do for you?” he answers.

I sigh. He did tell me he wasn’t going to stop calling me that.

“Hacker’s down. Raptor needs you to switch out for twenty-four hours and, if you’re willing, take me on for that amount of time.”

“What happened to Hacker?” he says, his tone instantly serious and intense.

I tell him about finding Stellan and how Hacker pushed me aside and fought him.

“He can’t be too injured if Raptor is only keeping him out for twenty-four hours,” he says, but I hear him moving around.

“His wound is already starting to heal, but he’s weak. He said he’d work with Yana to start connecting the security system to the new packhouse if he started feeling better.”

“Good. If he’s not done when it’s time to rejoin the Alpha Squad, I can finish the set up.”

“Thanks, Hijack.”

“Sphinx?”

“Yeah?”

“This isn’t your fault. Hacker’s a better fighter than that.”

I turn away from the others, walking away so they can’t hear me, even though I already confessed to Raptor.

“I froze, Hijack”

He’s quiet for a moment. “Then we need to work on that, Sphinx. You can’t freeze in the field.”

“I know.”

“You’ll get there, Sphinx. You haven’t even started at the Academy yet.”

“If you don’t want me to come with you …”

“Are you trying to get out of a mission, Sphinx?” he asks. There’s enough challenge in his tone that the Alpha in me won’t let me back down.

“No.”

“Good, then I’ll see you in an hour.”

I hang up and turn to see Raptor watching me while talking to Venom, Intrigue, Hellfire, and Cipher.

“Are we good?” he asks.

“Hijack will be here in an hour,” I tell them. “Good,” he says, gesturing me over. “Hellfire, thank you for your assistance. Hopefully we won’t need you again,” he says. 1

“Hey, that’s what Delta Squad is for. I had fun. Call me if you need me,” she says, before waving and heading downstairs where I know Henry is waiting for her.

“Okay, Sphinx, walk us through what you and Hacker did and saw,” Raptor says.

As soon as I start talking, Raptor stops me and we all go downstairs so I can show them where we were and where Hacker smelled Stellan.

“You didn’t smell him?” Raptor asks.

“Dasha and I weren’t sniffing for him. I didn’t expect him to be here. Hacker smelled him and handed me his computer. See, it’s right there,” I say, pointing to where I set it on a side table.

“He’ll want that,” Raptor says.

I quickly mind link Yorick and ask him to get someone to take the computer to Jude.

‘Nice job getting Hacker patched up, Wen,’ he says in the mind link.

‘Thanks,’ I say, still feeling guilty for him getting injured. I push that aside and lead the others through the steps that Jude took me.
