Yorick
“Alpha Yorick, please see me after class,” Alpha Michael says as Cyra and I walk out to Sparring class.
“Yes, sir,” I say, looking at Cyra and wondering what this is about.
Having Alpha Michael as one of our instructors has really pushed our Sparring class to new heights. He is teaching us some very technical holds, captures, and escapes, all of which are exciting because they are new and difficult.
I get paired with Zach today, but Cyra gets paired with Megan. Since I know she’s up to something with her morning apology that no one believed, I’m distracted, wanting to make sure she doesn’t take any cheap shots with Cyra.
However, unlike before, Megan seems focused on the skill we’ve been taught, not trying to take Cyra out.
“Alpha Yorick, how about you focus on your own sparring match and let your mate focus on hers,” Alpha Michael says, catching me.
“Yes, sir,” I say, refocusing on Zach.
He and I have always been very evenly matched but since this is a new skill for both of us, we struggle to achieve the goal, but help each other and talk through where we think the other went wrong.
When class is over, I’m feeling good about what I achieved today and I pull Cyra in for a quick kiss making sure she’s okay. ‘It was actually a great sparring session,’ she says in the mind link.
I frown. ‘Maybe Zach was right. Maybe someone did snatch her body and it’s not Megan at all anymore.’
Cyra laughs then catches up to our friends as I walk over to Alpha Michael.
“You wanted to see me, Sir?”
He stands in the way that Raptor and his team were standing during Alpha Leo’s court session, like he’s at parade rest as he looks me over, assessing me.
“I hear Saber wants you on her team,” he says.
“Yes, sir. She was in our pack over the weekend because of problems we encountered. I was very excited to be able to work with her and the C-Squad and learn more about the work they do.”
“Did you know that Raptor also has his eye on you, Striker?” he asks.
“I might have heard that rumor, sir. But honestly, with Cyra and I taking over two packs and needing to combine them into one, C-Squad is a better fit for me.”
He nods. “You do realize that C-Squad isn’t a weak squad, right? Just because the work that they do isn’t as intense as the work that Alpha and Beta squads do, that doesn’t mean that you don’t still have to maintain a higher level of fighting knowledge. There’s a reason we don’t allow pregnant she-wolves on any squad. The possibility of a fight is always there. It’s less in C-Squad, but it’s still a possibility when you’re arresting people who disagree with being caught.”
“I understand, sir.”
“Good, because distractions, like focusing on your mate and not practicing the skills I’m giving you are going to be the cause of you not making it onto a squad.”
I press my lips together tightly. “No offense, Alpha, but Megan has been a problem since the beginning of the school year. I was worried she’d hurt my mate.”
“First, your mate is at the Academy on her own achievements. She’s perfectly capable of holding her own in a sparring match.
As an Alpha of her own pack, she doesn’t need you or anyone else fighting her battles for her. All you’re doing is undermining her when you do that. Second, Megan isn’t going to be a problem any longer.”
I’m not sure what he means about Megan. It makes me wonder if Alpha Michael hasn’t put her on notice. But the part about standing up for Cyra I’ll have to think about. I don’t want to undermine her, especially in front of our pack. But I do want to protect her when needed.
“Yes, sir.”
“I’ll be the one assessing you for C-Squad. Just so you know, Nix wasn’t originally on the list of openings we had for the squads this year. There will now be an opening on each squad at the end of the year. Since you aren’t interested in the other two squads, I’m only assessing you for one. If I don’t feel you’re the best candidate for C-Squad, you won’t be making any squad.”
“Understood, sir. But, if for some reason you feel I’m not making the cut, could you pull me aside, like today and tell me what I need to do to get better?”
“I can do that. But for the most part, just keep doing what you’re doing and focus on you more and your mate less in class.” “Yes, sir.”
The rest of the week goes by in a blur. Cyra and I took classes all day, then would spend an hour on the phone with Dad every night hearing about what he has been doing and the decisions he’s making for the pack. By Tuesday, he demoted Gamma Hugo and brought him over to his side of the pack lands. On Wednesday, he sent Gamma Elliot over to assist Beta Eric with unrest on the other side. On Thursday, he started group warrior training in the center of the pack. By Friday, I was exhausted, but ready to get back to our pack and continue working to bring our pack together.
Before we left the Academy on Friday, Alpha Nevaeh approached us.
“These are the summons for the two of you to attend Alpha Stellan’s court date next Tuesday. Your father’s is scheduled for Thursday,” she says, giving us the summons for both court dates.
“I know you both have a lot going on, but your studies here are also very important. If you need any tutoring at night during the week, I will make myself available to assist you.”
“Thank you, Alpha.”
