Yorick
“Before we get to our brother-in-law, I have a question,” I say, jumping in before we go down the Quirin rabbit hole. I’ve been quiet, letting Ramin have his say. I can agree that Cyra’s father was a total piece of shit and I know that if Quirin or anyone ever tried to keep me and our family away from my sisters, it would not go well. So, I can understand his anger and concern that Arden raised Cyra to be just like him. Little does he know that Cyra was just another pawn in Arden’s sick and twisted game of life.
“You called Cyra’s mother Soraya, right?” I ask, looking from Alpha Ramin to Cyra.
“That was her name,” Ramin says.
I look at Cyra. “But Hacker said her name was Laura and you agreed.”
“Yes, I was going to ask about that too. My father always called my mother Laura and that’s the name that Hacker found when he went searching for the money.”
Ramin growls low.
“What is it?” Arman asks him.
“Laura was her middle name. It’s a more English name. It was our grandmother’s name. Arden is also an English name. If your private investigator found the name Laura rather than Soraya, it’s possible that she had her name legally changed. If she did, it would have been for him. She was always proud of our Persian heritage.”
Cyra looks at me. “We can have Hacker investigate it and see. Knowing your father like we do, I’d have to agree that he would have pressured her into legally changing her name. Especially if he was angry at you for not giving him the money he wanted,” I say to Ramin. “He would have wanted to separate her from her family in all ways possible.”
“Speaking of money, how would Alpha Christer and Alpha Stellan have known about my inheritance if I didn’t?” Cyra asks them.
“I have no idea. Maybe it was part of the negotiations to get their agreement in the alliance bond,” Alpha Ramin says thoughtfully.
“Or maybe, they know the attorney who put the legal docuements together. You had to go outside the pack for that, didn’t you, Dad?” Arman asks.
“I did. I guess that’s another possibility. I’ll have to go back and research who the attorney was and which pack he belonged to. It’s been nearly twenty years. Soraya decided to give her inheritance to her children when she realized that Arden was possibly going to jail for illegal activities. That day in court, she approached me about moving it over and putting it in her children’s names. I’m guessing she knew she was pregnant with you. The timing fits,” Ramin says.
“Why do you think she didn’t leave my father?” Cyra asks.
Ramin looks at her with the first softness I’ve seen since he arrived. “She wouldn’t have wanted to risk you. Rejecting him at that time would have made her weak. She wouldn’t have risked miscarrying by rejecting him. Maybe he knew that and it’s why he got her pregnant again right away. You said he’s going to trial for embezzlement?”
“Well, that and basically selling me into an alliance agreement. Stellan is going to trial for the alliance agreement, knowing about my father’s embezzlement and not reporting it to the Council, and now he’s also been included in the investigation of tampering with birth control,” Cyra says.
“Birth control?” Arman asks as Dad walks back in with food.
But Ramin figured it out.
“He wanted the other twenty-five million, didn’t he?” he asks Cyra.
“I think so. When he came to try and force his mark on me, he said he was going to put a pup in me before he was done,” she says, making me growl. She smiles at me, squeezing my hand. “I was on birth control and didn’t realize that it was a placebo. It has caused a lot of problems in our pack with older she-wolves becoming pregnant when they thought they were on birth control.”
“Thankfully we were alerted to his plan and we had the Council and the leader of the Alpha squad on site to deal with him when he arrived,” I say.
“Not to mention the retired leader of the Alpha squad who is now one of our instructors,” Cyra says still watching me.
I pull her hand to my mouth, holding her gaze while I kiss the back of her hand.
Someone, Arman maybe, clears his throat. Obviously, he’s not used to the level of affection that my family and I show our
mates. 1
“So, are you pregnant?” he asks.
“We have to check again this weekend. I wasn’t when we checked last weekend, but there’s a concern that if I wasn’t on active birth control when Yorick and I marked and mated, that I could be. If my test is negative again this weekend, Luna Yara wants to check one more time. If the test is still negative after that, I can go back on birth control safely,” she tell them.
“You’ll let us know, I hope. Not just because you’ll get the rest of your inheritance once you’re pregnant, but we’d also like to know how you’re doing, cousin,” Arman says.
“I’d also like to hear the story of how you became co-Alphas,” Ramin says as we begin to eat.
“Cyra defeated her father in a battle for the pack,” I say proudly.
“Now THAT is a story I want to hear,” Ramin says. He’s relaxing more and more the longer we talk.
