After getting my clearance from Luna Yara, I went to the southern packhouse to search for my phone. The last time I remember having it, it was in my pocket before I shifted and fought with Stellan. If no one brought it to me, it’s probably still there. Since everyone was busy going after Stellan and making sure Cyra, Lila, and their pups were safe, I’m not surprised when I find it in the corner of the hallway where I had Wendy pinned against the wall.
I look back down the hall, remembering the moment I realized that Stellan was feral and he was going to attack. The thing is, he didn’t come at me even though I was the bigger threat. He was coming for Wendy.
When I pick up my phone, it’s cracked. Shit.
I ignore the pain as I swipe my thumb through the broken screen and navigate to the phone icon before pressing the call button for Hijack.
“Are you still here?” he asks when I answer.
“Yes. How close are you to Yana?” I ask.
I hear him give her some instructions, then step away.
“What’s up?” he asks, obviously making sure that Phisher doesn’t know I need to talk about her family.
“Stellan was targeting Wendy.”
He sighs. “I sent you and Tracker a message. Check it.”
“Hang on.”
I swipe through my cracked screen, slicing my finger as I find the text message from Hijack. I read through his message.
“Fuck!” I growl.
“Yeah, it’s not good,” he says.
“I’m heading home in four days. Between now and then, I’ll start watching and I need to keep searching for Alphas Patrick and Peter, and Justine.”
“I’ll let you know if I have a chance to look at any of the videos before then. But don’t forget, Leo only has a few more months before he’s released,” he says, his voice low so Yana can’t here.
“Yeah. We need to know for sure before he’s released. Do you need any help with the security system?”
“Nah. I have a helper and she’s excited to pretty much do anything that I say is techy,” he says.
“Just remember she’s underage,” I tell him. I don’t think he’ll forget, but it’s not like Hijack to be nice to people. He’s usually reserved at best and standoffish at worst.
“Should I give you the same reminder about Sphinx,” he growls, obviously irritated with my comment.
“I remind myself every day that she hasn’t yet turned eighteen, Lane. But she’s a lot closer to eighteen than Yana is.”
“I’m not a pedophile,” he growls.
“I know. You’re just …” I stop, not sure what I’m trying to say.
“I’m just what?” he growls again.
“Just be careful. I’ll let you know how thing go at the council,” I say before he can growl at me again. Hijack is a strong Alpha male, but so am I. We spar together a lot since we’re the only two males in third year. We also battle with Alpha Michael, Raptor, Javelin, and Saber. I’m guessing now that they’ve added a Delta Squad, we’ll start sparring with Lace once she’s had her pup and back to work full-time. That’s how the elite squads know we’re able to hold our own. We train with their leaders and frequently with their teams. It’s daily for us, but it rotates for them depending on who is on assignment and who is here. I get in my car and check the GPS I have on Wendy’s phone. She’s close enough to the council chambers that I know I don’t have time to stop and get a new phone. That will have to wait. I want to make sure that she’s able to answer their questions without any backlash.
Once I’m on my way, I know who I need to call.
“Siri, call Tracer,” I say to the Bluetooth. 1
“Calling Tracker,” Siri says. Wendy hasn’t noticed that I’ve made her voice the voice of my Siri. I wonder if she’ll find it cute or creepy when she does. 1
“Hacker?” Tracker answers.
“Sphinx is on her way to the council for a debrief,” I say.
“I’m aware. Raptor told me. I’m already here.”
I breathe a sigh of relief.
“Thank you.”
“Just because I’m not dating her doesn’t mean I don’t want to make sure that she’s okay, Hacker. She’s one of us.”
By the time I get to the council chambers, they’re already interviewing Wendy and I’m not allowed inside.
I stand outside, pacing and hoping that she’s okay. I’m sure she is. Tracker is here and her father is here.
When the doors finally open, I step forward, ready to go find her, but she’s right there, smiling.
“Everything good?” I ask, looking at her expression before looking behind her. The council looks calm and Tracker nods at me, so I refocus on Wendy.
“Yeah. They had a lot of questions, since I was the one who spotted Stellan. But everything is good. Thanks for coming.” “Of course. Are you hungry? And where are you going now? Back to Yorick and Cyra’s pack?” I ask.
She turns and looks at her father who is talking to Councilman Edward. “Yeah, back to Yorick and Cyra’s pack. And yes, I’m hungry. What about you?”
“Well, I was invited to Yorick and Cyra’s party, but I’m not sure if they’re still planning on having it with everything that happened.”
“Yeah, they are. And they’d love to have you there, I’m sure,” she says.
