Piper
I didn’t mean to get lost in his kiss. I didn’t intend for the kiss to last longer than a quick peck to appease the girls, but Henry had other plans. The moment his lips met mine, I knew 1 was in trouble. I reached up to grab his shirt and push him off me, but all ended up doing was holding him closer to me.
The warm tingles I’d felt when he touched my cheek earlier lit up across my face, sending a pulsing signal straight to my core and my wolf, who is apparently in total agreement with my traitorous body. His possessive growl only intensified the heat throbbing between my thighs.
“See, that’s how you kiss and make up, just like mommy and daddy do,” a little voice says, cutting through the fog in my brain.
I yank myself away from the kiss, completely mortified that I’ve gotten lost in the kiss. The moment I do, Henry dances away, as if expecting the punch that I’m on the verge of delivering.
He raises his hands, smiling at me. The glow in his eyes lets me know his wolf is forward just like Fallon is.
“I just wanted to make sure that I kissed you thoroughly enough that we were friends again,” he says.I narrow my eyes at him, knowing I can’t knock him on his ass in front of Quirin’s daughters or in the middle of Vivienne’s party. So instead, I give him my fake smile.
He tilts his head in an incredibly adorable way that I force myself to ignore and I point at him.
“I accept your offer to spar in the morning, Alpha.”
His smile goes mega-watt and my knees go so weak I’m surprised don’t fall to the ground at his feet.
“Excellent,” he purrs.
I step up to him, forcing myself to only take the smallest inhale possible to say what I need to say. His scent still has me fighting against the pull of the stupid mate bond.
“We’ll see if you still feel that way tomorrow,” I growl.
Rather than step back like anyone with a sense of self-preservation would do, he steps forward. I’m forced to take another breath, sucking in his cedar and eucalyptus scent. It somehow excites and calms me at the same time.
“I guarantee you, I will enjoy myself, no matter who the winner of our battle is.”
“I can assure that I will be the winner,” I say.
“See, what you don’t understand is, even if I lose, I’ve already won just by getting to spend more time with you, my mate,” he whispers so only I can hear.”See you soon, Piper,” he says louder, then turns to the others behind me. “Congratulations, Vivienne. My brother is an excellent Alpha. You could not have made a better choice than to join his pack.”
Thank you, Alpha,” she says, and I can tell she’s not sure if she’s betraying me by thanking him. But good manners dictate that she should thank him.
“Ladies,” he says in his fucking charming way, nodding his head to Vivienne’s friends before turning to Quirin’s pups.
“Ready?”
“Bye, Alpha,” Jade and Kaitlin say as Henry swings the twins onto his back.
‘ “Don’t forget you’re sparring with us tomorrow too, Piper,”
Kendra says as Henry carries them off.
“I won’t,” I call out, mesmerized once again at how naturally he acts with Alpha Quirin’s pups.
“Oh my goddess, Alpha Piper! You have to spill the tea!” Jade whisper yells at me.
“What? What do you mean?” I ask, dragging my eyes away from Henry.
“She means that Alpha Henry has never, and mean
NEVER, kissed ANYONE in our pack before. What the hell is going on between you two?” Kaitlin asks.
“Nothing. There’s nothing between us. He has a chosen mate,” I say.”It didn’t look like it to me,” Jade says.
“Yeah, I don’t see him kissing a woman like that if he’s got a chosen mate back home. It’s not his style,” Kaitlin says.
“Not at all,” Jade agrees.
“Maybe you don’t know him as well as you think you do,” I say, shrugging. But it makes me wonder. If they’re right, then where is his chosen mate and why isn’t she here?
And why did he kiss me like that, especially in front of such a large audience?
I tense, waiting for him to say something to me, but as he gets closer, realize why he was wrinkling his nose.
Luna Farrah begins laughing. “It happened again, huh, Henry?” she asks.
“I swear, it’s a conspiracy. Either that or Q’s pups prefer the way I change them,” he says, shaking his head.
“The way you change them?” I ask, frowning at him. I can guarantee that my father has never changed a diaper in his life, nor has my brother.
“Yes. Quaide here has pooped in his diaper. Can’t you smell it? I’m going to have to ask Kennedy what she’s eating that makes it smell this bad,” he says, making a face.
“And YOU’RE going to change him?” I clarify.
“Well, yeah. I was holding him. That’s how it works around here. Besides,” he says, grinning mischievously at me. “I consider it practice for when my mate and I have our own. pups.”
He winks and walks past me into the packhouse.
“Does he even know how to change a diaper?” I ask distractedly. I hadn’t meant for anyone to answer me, but Luna Farrah does.
“Oh yes. He’s quite adept at changing diapers, actually.
He’ll make an excellent father, someday,” she says.
When I meet her eyes, I realize that she knows about me. I can feel my cheeks heating uncomfortably.
“Of course,” I say, Looking away.
The rest of the night goes by quickly, but that night, while I’m lying in bed, I can’t get the image of Henry holding pups, or the feeling of his lips pressed against mine out of my head. It takes me a very long time to fall asleep and when I finally do, Henry stars in my dreams. Only this time, he’s carrying OUR pup inside to change and when he stops beside me, it’s to kiss me the way he kissed me earlier.
When I wake up, I realize how very dangerous dreams can be because now I want that. I want it with a desperate, instinctual need and until I know what’s going on with his chosen mate, I can’t allow myself to have those sorts of dreams.
