Piper
Beta Lara, Iris, and Natalie all looked terrified when I walked up to them.
“Ladies, I’m so sorry this happened to you. I wish you had come to me.”
“We couldn’t, Alpha. You were gone and your father and brother threatened us if we said anything,” Beta Lara says.
“I’m glad you finally did say something. You should never have been put in that position in the first place. And, by the way, I’m Luna Piper now. My mate, Henry, is here supporting us,” I say, nodding at my mate. He’s watching the room, but also keeping an eye on me.
“Who are all these other people?” Natalie asks.
“My family,” I say proudly.
“Your family?” Iris asks.
“Yes. Alpha Quirin is Henry’s brother. The others, or most of them, are the Hills. Henry grew up with them and they treat him like he’s just another brother. A couple of them are my friends from the Academy, here to support me too.”
“Is that Vivienne?” Lara asks.
I turn and see my sister. “Yes. Our father tried to sell both of us into a mate bond as well.””Our father?” Lara asks.
I smile as Vivienne walks up and says hello. “Vivienne and I are half-sisters. Our father murdered her mother. Those charges are pending until the conclusion of this trial while the tech team and Vivienne work to gain more proof and possibly find other women killed by our father.”
“One could argue, Piper, that our sperm donor kitted your mother as well by constantly cheating on the mate bond,” she says.
“How is your brother, Luna?” Iris asks.
“Which one?” I ask.
“Gavin. I was glad when he got away. Alpha Gage was furious, but when we heard he’d found you, we felt better,” Lara says.
“He was worried that you might have thought he’d known about what happened to you,” I tell them.
“We know he didn’t. Neither did Alpha Gage, although I’m not sure it would have mattered if he had known. He always believed what your father and Alpha Grady told him,” Natalie says.
“I think that’s changing. We’re having lunch with him today, at his request. We’ll see how that goes,” I say, as we sit. Without saying it, Vivienne and I sit on either side of the women, wrapping them in our protective presence.
Behind us, my friends and family also provide a protectivebarrier.
As soon as my father walks out, he sees us and snarls.
Poor Javelin is on duty again today. That makes me wonder. If the squads are out on missions, is it possible that I’d be called to court to manage unruly defendants?
Having been here several times now, I wouldn’t mind, especially since it means I’d be able to go home every night.
This week, Javelin has Titan with her. He’s huge and I’m wondering if he’s here because my father was such a problem last time. My father’s view of us is blocked by Titan’s massive frame as he intentionally puts himself between my father and us. I reach over and clasp Lara’s hand, squeezing and hoping that my presence is comforting to her.
When the council comes out, Councilman Edward stands at the front, like always.
“Today we start the trial for Alpha Glenn Conley, accused of trying to sell his daughters into a mate bond. I understand the prosecution has some additional witnesses here today, but first, we need to clarify Alpha Glenn’s assertion that Vivienne Abbott is not his daughter. Dr. Hill, are you in the courtroom today?” he asks, looking out to the audience.
I turn and see Yara stand. “Yes, Councilman. I’m here.”
Since this trial is about the forced mate bonds, Vivienne wasn’t asked about her mother or how she came to be in our pack. She was, however, asked to explain how she knew Gamma Nathan and her relationship with him.
“I was a rogue on the streets, selling my body to survive.
He was a client,” she said softly. I hate that she has to publicly announce what she did to survive. But to her credit, she stands tall, her chin raised as she answers every question asked of her without any hesitation orquiver in her voice.
When she’s done, Beta Lara is called forward. I watch her stand, seeing her hands shake. My father is glaring at her, daring her to speak against him. I lean forward to the prosecuting attorney.
“Can I stand with her as a previous Alpha of her pack?” I ask him.
“Only her current Alpha can stand with her,” he says.
“She renounced the pack when she left. All three of them did. They have no Alpha,” I tell him.
He looks at the two women behind me, realizing that they will struggle even more than Beta Lara when it’s their turn. He stands, addressing the council.
“Councilman, it has come to my attention that Beta Lara is currently a lone wolf. Luna Piper, a previous Alpha in her pack has offered to stand with her during her testimony.”
He looks at me, then turns to the other council members.
They speak for a moment, then he turns around.
“I’m afraid that only an Alpha can stand with someone during a court proceeding and Luna Piper clearly identified her role as Luna in a previous court hearing.
However, because of the unusual circumstances in this case, Beta Lara, if there is another Alpha in this courtroom whom you feel comfortable standing beside you, we will allow it,” he says.
