Henry
As I talk to Gage, Ican feel Piper’s awe and love blasting through the bond. I’m not sure where those emotions are coming from, but I tuck them away until we say goodbye to Gage.
“When you decide what you want to do, let us know. We’ll support you no matter what your decision is, unless that decision is to continue to run the pack as it has been.”
“Thank you, Alpha Henry,” he says.
“Gage, if you’re really, truly wanting to make a change, to be a better man than your father and brother, I would welcome you into this family. If that’s the case, then I’m just Henry.”
“Henry is like the big brother that Grady should have been but never was, Gage,” Gavin tells him.
“It seems like it,” Gage says.
“I hope we hear from you, Gage. The ball is in your court,” Piper says, hugging her brother goodbye. Much like he did with Vivienne, he wraps his arms around her, holding on to her as if she’s a lifeline that he’s afraid to let go of.
When he finally lets go, he and Gavin begin walking back.
“We’ll be right there, Gavin,” I say, holding Piper back. When they’re out of earshot, i pull her against me. “What was all that I was feeling from you in there?” I ask her.
“How are you so perfect?” she murmurs, leaning into me.
“I’m far from perfect. But if I’m perfect for you, that’s all that matters.”
“You were so good with him, so patient. You didn’t get angry, you didn’t raise your voice, and you exuded your calm so that the rest of us stayed calm as well. If it had only been him and me, I would have blown it, and he’d still be feeling lost and alone. How is it possible that I was mated to the most wonderful man in the world?”
1 smile, leaning down to press my lips to hers. I keep it slow and light so we don’t make a spectacle of ourselves on the sidewalk in front of the diner.
“He reminds me of Quirin after he lost his father,” I say shrugging. “I have a lot of experience with an angry Alpha who feels alone.”
She slides her hand around my neck and into my hair, her touch sending shivers and waves of desire through my body. “You are going to make an incredible father to our pups.”
I raise an eyebrow at her. “Are we ready to have the pup conversation?” The desire of a moment ago is now intensified with my excitement at the idea of having a pup with my mate. She slides her free hand down my chest as I wrap my arms more tightly around her.
“I’ve been thinking about it. Obviously, I need to get through graduation..And then, I’d like to participate in at least one, maybe two rotations for the elite squads. Then, I’d like for us to start actively trying to have a pup.”
“I told you once before, all you need to do is tell me when. you’re ready and I will fill your body so full of my sperm, you’ll be lucky if you don’t have multiples.”
She grins, lifting up on her toes and nipping at my bottom lip. “You’re not planning to compete with Quirin, are you?”
1 laugh. “I don’t think anyone can compete with Quirin, not when nearly all of Kennedy’s pregnancies have been multiples. But I’d be more than happy to have our share of pups running around the packhouse.”
I kiss her again, this time not caring if the entire world sees how happy my mate has made me. Then I take her hand and begin leading her back to the car. She wraps her arm around mine, leaning into me as we walk. I kiss her nose, her forehead, and her lips as we make our way back to the car.
“Do they always kiss this much?” I hear Gage ask.
“Trust me, this is minor. If you ever share a hotel room with them, bring ear plugs,” Gavin says.
“Is it weird for you to see them like this all the time?”Gage asks.
“It was at first, but now, I can see how happy Henry makes Piper and how happy she makes him. We never had that in dad or Grady’s pack..Of course, they never recognized the value that she-wolves bring to the pack or a relationship, so I guess it’s not surprising,” Gavin says.
“You bring up a good point, Gavin,” I say as Piper and! walk up. “After you decide what you want to do, Gage, you should consider visiting our pack. It might be good for you to see what a pack that values it’s she-wolves looks like. It will be a cultural shift in your pack, if you decide to remain Alpha.”
“You’d let me come visit?” he asks.
“I’d expect you to,” I tell him. “And I’d want you to visit Connor’s, Quirin’s, and Cyra and Yorick’s packs too. Mine isn’t the only way to run a good pack, and it might not fit into how you want to run your pack. It’s good to see how other packs are run so you can decide what’s best for your own. Yorick and Cyra’s pack, in particular, has gone through a lot of transition over the past few months, combining two packs into one. They would probably have some good insights for you on how to change the cultural of a pack.”
“Thank you, Al… Thank you, Henry.”
“You’re welcome.” I pause for only a moment. “I give hugs too, if you want one.”Gage frowns and looks at Gavin who shrugs. “He’s a good hugger. Better than Piper.”
“Hey!” she grumbles, making him laugh.
I open my arms and watch Gage struggle against a lifetime of teachings about what a ‘real man’ or a ‘real Alpha should and shouldn’t do. Then he steps up to me, and I wrap my arms around him.
It takes him a moment, but he finally wraps his arms around me.
“It’s going to be okay, Gage, no matter what you decide. If you want help, we’ll help you,” I say quietly.
He nods against my shoulder and as soon as he lets go, l step back.
“I hope we hear from you soon.”
Once he’s driving off, I called Dallas to make sure Beta Lara, Iris, and Natalie arrived in our pack safely. I was pleasantly surprised when he told me that Nicolette helped to get them settled.
Rather than head straight back to the hotel, I take Piper and Gavin out in the city, seeing the sights and walking hand-in-hand with the love of my life. We stop for dinner and by the time we return, everyone is in high spirits.
I stare at this man, this patient man who hasn’t pushed me into any type of physical interaction, this caring man who spends hours a day with my son and never once raises his voice at him, this empathic man who thinks about the needs to three she-wolves coming to his pack and how they might be intimidated by him and the pack’s Gamma.
‘Mate.’ The faint sound of my wolf makes my entire body jolt.
“Hey, it’s okay if you don’t want to. I can find someone else to do it,” Dallas says, taking my reaction as a response to his words.
“It’s not that,” I say, my eyes filling with tears.
He frowns, looking like he desperately wants to comfort me but he’s afraid to touch me.
“I just heard Shiloh,” I say, the tears beginning to streamdown my cheeks.
“Oh, Nicolette! That’s fantastic,” he says, forgetting to be careful with me and pulling me into his arms.
I let him hold me, feeling complete and utter relief that my wolf is back. I don’t care that she’s weak, she’s here.
And, if I’m being honest, it feels really good to be in Dallas’ arms.
‘Our mate smells good, Shiloh says.
‘He’s been spending as much time as possible with me to help you get stronger.’
He has a good, strong wolf. He’s good to our pup. I like him, she says.
1 do too, I tell her, meaning it. Now that she’s awake and has given Dallas her stamp of approval, I feel better about the feelings that have been swirling in my heart and my head.
When I pull away, he lets me go, but he cups my face in his hands and gently brushes the tears off my face with his thumbs.
“I’m so happy for you and for Shiloh.”
“Me too. To answer your earlier question, I’ll be happy to help. And maybe, after they’re settled, you and I could have dinner together, just the two of us.”
I watch as his face breaks into a beautiful smile. “I would love that.
“Then, it’s a date,” I say, making him smile even bigger.
“It’s a date.”
