326 Chapter 326 The Truth Behind The Door

Blanche’s POVO

When I settled onto the couch, Lucia still hadn’t joined me. She’d drifted to the far side of the hall, leaving me wondering what she was doing over there.

I stared down at my phone screen, expecting Vincent to take his sweet time getting back to me. Instead, his response came lightningfast.

Vincent: [What’s going on? Already missing me?]

Just seeing those words, I could practically visualize that cocky smirk of his. So typical

I tapped out a reply: [I’m at your house.]

Vincent: [I know.]

That caught me off guard. I typed back: [It’s New Year’s Eve. How come you’re not home with your mom? She seems pretty upset.]

The little Typingindicator popped up under Vincent’s name.

A beat later, his message appeared: [Don’t need to be therelong as you’ve got my back, she’s golden.]

Now I was really confused. I couldn’t stop myself from asking. [So you’re still stuck at the office?]

But Vincent dodged the question entirely: [You worried about me?]

I let out a breath as I typed: [Just curious. Don’t read into it.]

Vincent: [Go eat. Mom’s food is incredible. Eat enough for both of us, and keep her company.]

I was about to tell Vincent we’d already finished dinner when footsteps approached.

I glanced up to find Lucia walking over, a bottle of red wine in one hand, two glasses in the other.

Catching my stare, she chuckled softly. You drink?*

I nodded. A little.

Lucia’s smile widened. Perfect. Join me.

It wasn’t really a requestmore like a decision she’d made for both of us.

I could tell refusing wasn’t an option.

After a pause, I said, Sure, I’ll have a drink with you.

Lucia sat down and poured me half a glass.

We clinked glasses and drank, and before I knew it, the bottle was bone dry.

Lucia had knocked back most of itpractically the entire thing solo.

Her cheeks were flushed pink, her eyes glassy and unfocused.

From experience, I could tell she was getting pretty buzzed.

Lucia started laughing as she launched into childhood stories about Vincent. That kid was pure trouble. He’d rip up the neighborsfruit trees, then take a dump in the holes he made. At school, he’d escape by scaling the walls while teachers tore the place apart looking for him

Lucia had endless tales, and I just listened, absorbing every detail.

But as she kept talking, her eyes grew watery and tears began sliding down her cheeks. Then, voice thick and unsteady, she mumbled, Blanche, I need to check on my troublemaker.

With that, Lucia pushed herself upthough she swayed dangerously.

Hearing this, I stood too, concerned. I reached out to steady her. Aunt Lucia, it’s really late. Maybe you should call it a night?

Lucia just smiled and patted my hand gently. It’s fine. He’s just upstairs, not far. I want to peek in on him.”

I couldn’t help but smile back. Aunt Lucia is definitely tipsy, I thought.

Still worried, I followed her upstairs to make sure she didn’t hurt herself.

Upstairs, Lucia stopped at one of the doors. She knocked, but silence came from

within.

She tried the handle, but it was locked.

Getting frustrated, Lucia started shouting at the door: You little brat, you coward,

come out here now!

Lucia was wobbling, barely staying upright.

Afraid she might topple over, I quickly moved to support her. Aunt Lucia, let me help you to your room.

Lucia turned to me, tears pooling in her bloodshot eyes. She slurred: Blanche, that troublemaker’s right in there. He’s hiding on purpose because he doesn’t want you seeing him all messed up, won’t even open the door for me. It’s because he loves you so damn muchmakes him stubborn as hell…”

I was honestly lost by her drunken rambling, but I just smiled gently. Aunt Lucia, you’re completely wasted.

Lucia sighed, her words fuzzy: Yeah, I amJust, can you check on him? I know he’s hurting in there.

I couldn’t tell if Lucia was just babbling nonsense or speaking truth, but I nodded anyway. Okay.”

Lucia looked at me, her eyes still red and teary. Think about it, Blanchehe’s crazy about you. You came all the way here, so how could he not want to see you? And why would he send me to pick you up? He could’ve gotten you himself. If he’d shown up just a little earlier, you wouldn’t have had to endure all that crap with the Jacobs. It’s all his fault, that stubborn little punk! He’s driving me insane!

I figured Lucia was just rambling drunkenly, so I nodded along softly: Yeah, I get it.

Lucia reached out and grasped my hand tenderly. Blanche, listenVincent’s got more tricks up his sleeve than you’ll ever imagine. You better help me keep that boy in line, okay?

My heart jumped. I could feel that Lucia was genuinely accepting me as family.

It touched me deeply, but the reality remainedI was still Zain’s wife. Our divorce hadn’t even happened yet.

Even if the divorce went through, being with Vincent was never something I’d seriously considered.

In the past, my feelings for Zain ran so deep I didn’t care about our familiesdifferences.

But now, as an adult, there was so much more I had to consider.

Vincent’s worldthat was still somewhere I could never reach.

I was kind of lost in thought. Meeting Lucia’s earnest gaze, I felt awkward and started

to say, I…”

But Lucia cut me off: I’m drunk. Need to lie down.

After hearing that, I stayed quiet.

I gently supported Lucia and guided her to the bedroom.

Inside, I helped Lucia out of her coat and shoes.

Then I dampened a towel and carefully cleaned her hands and face.
