The massive auditorium was a mosaic of shifting shadows and bustling crowds.
The air buzzed with the laughter and chatter of countless students.
Many were tracking down their professors and friends for commemorative photos.
Even more were couples, huddled together in groups of two or three, embracing the dawn of their futures.
—But she was running toward him, clutching the bouquet the university had given her.
The beautiful pink sash swayed gently with every step she took.
Her eyes crinkled into a smile as she wove through the noisy crowd, making a beeline straight for him.
Her eyes sparkled. Smiling, Celia came to a stop in front of Alistair.
Because she had been running, she was slightly breathless, a rosy flush dusting her cheeks.
"Uncle Alistair!"
She called out to him, simultaneously moving the tassel on her cap back to the right side.
Alistair looked down at her. "What is it?"
Celia's smile deepened, her eyes bright as stars. "Could you turn my tassel for me?"
An unreadable emotion flickered in his dark eyes. His long lashes lowered as his deep voice rumbled, "Didn't someone else already do it?"
Celia looked up, beaming. "But I want you to do it again. To me, you are the closest person in the world besides Grandpa."
Her eyes shone with sincerity, looking up at him with earnest, perfect innocence.
The man was tall. From his vantage point, he could easily see the top of her head as she tilted it downward.
The graduation cap was a bit too big, and a few strands of hair had escaped her clips, falling rebelliously over her chest.
"Please, turn my tassel?" she asked once more.
The golden fringe swayed near her ear. Alistair heard his own voice reply.
"Alright."
He raised his hand. His right fingers gently caught the tassel. With a movement that was incredibly light, slow, and profoundly solemn, he guided it over to the left side of her cap.
"Thank you," Celia cheered happily.
Knowing exactly what was coming, Celia slapped on a look of total shock, staring at Jacob in utter bewilderment.
The rest of the auditorium lights flickered on. The next second, a massive crowd of students surged forward, surrounding them, clapping and cheering!
Holding a massive bouquet of roses, Jacob walked toward her step by step.
Wearing a bashful smile, he stopped in front of her and offered the flowers. "Celia, I like you."
The moment the words left his mouth, the surrounding students cheered even louder, some even whistling aggressively.
"I've liked you since the first time I saw you in the library. Celia, will you be my girlfriend?"
Jacob was dressed in a crisp, clean shirt, his hair styled flawlessly. It looked like he had genuinely put some effort into this.
She used to think Jacob was somewhat decent-looking, but after spending so much time looking at a man with Alistair's striking features, Jacob simply faded into the background.
Her eyes wide, Celia stared at the flowers, a masterful portrait of panic and confusion.
"J-Jacob, what are you doing?"
Jacob smiled shyly, scratching the back of his head. "I got both our classes together to help me confess. I really hope you'll say yes."
