That would be incredibly petty. That incident happened a while ago; it was impressive he had held onto the grudge for this long.
Callahan seemed dissatisfied with her shock. He raised an eyebrow, his tone bordering on arrogant. "Micah gave you bags. I gave you fireworks. Is there a problem?"
He scoffed lightly. "Surely my fireworks aren't inferior to the bags he gave you?"
Leilani couldn't help but laugh. "Callahan, are you five years old?"
Callahan didn't flinch. "Not childish. I just refuse to lose to Micah."
Leilani laughed out loud. Usually, Callahan was the picture of calm and restraint, but when it came to this, he was childish in the cutest way possible.
Regardless of the motive, Leilani loved the display. Even if it was born of a rivalry with Micah, the effort he put into it was visible.
The night breeze brushed past them, the glow of the fireworks casting a soft, romantic filter over the scene.
Down below, near the river by the Langley Group building, a crowd had gathered, looking up in awe at the display.
"Wow! Is someone proposing? That's so romantic!"
"My god, they actually spelled out a name with fireworks! Do you know how much that costs?"
"I wonder who the lucky girl is. She's so happy!"
"Is this a movie shoot? Or maybe we're just extras in someone else's rom-com?"
...
The fireworks eventually faded, returning the night sky to silence. Leilani and Callahan stood quietly in the aftermath.
Leilani glanced up to glare at him, but the moment she met his smiling eyes, her heart skipped a beat again.
...
The atmosphere remained charged as he drove her home. When the car pulled up to the apartment building, Callahan got out and walked around to open the passenger door.
"I'll walk you up."
Leilani wanted to refuse, but meeting his gaze, she found herself nodding.
They stood side by side in the elevator, silent, their fingers brushing against each other before pulling back.
At her door, Leilani looked down to find her keys. Callahan stood behind her, his gaze darkening as it fell on her flushed ear. She slid the key into the lock. The door opened a crack. Just as she turned to say goodnight, her wrist was suddenly caught.
