The Professor's Mate Clause novel Chapter 88

ADRIAN’S POV

I run until I can’t feel my legs anymore. Until exhaustion should force me to stop. But it doesn’t. Just keep running. Away from what I almost did. Away from the terror in Freya’s eyes. Away from the monster I almost became.

Eventually I shift back to human. Collapse in a clearing I’ve known for decades. The place I come when leadership becomes too much. When the weight of being Alpha crushes me. When I need to remember who I am beneath the title.

Except I don’t know who that is anymore. Don’t know anything except that I almost forced a mating mark on my mate. Almost violated her in the worst way possible. Almost proved I’m no better than Asher. Than any Alpha who uses power to control instead of protect.

“You look like hell.” A voice. Female. Familiar. From the shadows of the trees.

I’m on my feet instantly. Defensive. “Who’s there? Show yourself.”

A woman steps into the moonlight. Old. Ancient even by wolf standards. Silver hair. Sharp eyes. I know her. Everyone knows her. Elder Moira. The one Alpha who refused to sit on the High Council. Who rejected their politics. Who lives alone and answers to no one.

“What do you want Moira?”

“To offer you a deal. A way to save your mate. A way to end this war. A way to fix what you’ve broken.” She moves closer. Not threatening. Just present. “I’ve been watching you Adrian. Watching your struggle. Your pain. Your desperation to protect the girl while fighting a war you can’t win.”

“I’m not interested in deals. Not from the Council. Not from anyone.”

“Good thing I’m not the Council then.” She sits on a fallen log. Gestures for me to sit. “I’m someone who’s lived too long. Seen too much. Knows things that could help you. If you’re willing to listen.”

Against my better judgment I sit. “What kind of things?”

“Asher’s weakness. The real one. Not the silver poisoning Kelvin told you about. Something deeper. More fundamental. Something that could end him permanently.” Her eyes gleam. “But it comes with a price. They always do.”

“What price?”

“After the war. When Asher is defeated. You send the girl away. Far from here, Far from pack politics. Far from the High Council’s reach. You let her be free. Be human. Be safe from all of this.” She leans forward. “You love her enough to let her go. To give her the life she deserves instead of dragging her through supernatural wars and politics. That’s the price.”

My blood runs cold. “You want me to reject her. Send her away. After everything.”

“I want you to save her. The Council won’t stop. Even if you defeat Asher they’ll find another way to separate you. Another law to enforce. Another Alpha to weaponize against you.” She shakes her head. “The only way she’s truly safe is away from you. Away from all of this. Free to live her life without supernatural complications.”

“She’d never agree to that,”

“Which is why you don’t tell her until after. Until the war is won. Until she’s strong enough to survive without you.” Moira stands. “I’m offering you a way to save her life Adrian. To give her freedom. Safety. A future that doesn’t end with her dead because she loved the wrong wolf. All you have to do is let her go when the time comes.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then watch her die. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But eventually. The Council will make sure of it. Asher will make sure of it. Someone will make sure of it. Because as long as she’s bonded to you she’s a target A weapon to use against you. A liability.” She starts walking away. “You have until dawn to decide. Meet me here if you agree. I’ll tell you everything you need to

know to defeat Asher. To end this war. To save everyone except your relationship. That’s the trade. Knowledge for heartbreak. Victory for loss. Take it or leave it.”

She disappears into the shadows. Leaving me alone. With an impossible choice. With the knowledge that she’s probably right. That keeping Freya is selfish. Dangerous. A death sentence she doesn’t deserve.

But sending her away. Rejecting her. Breaking both our hearts. How is that better? How is that love? How is that anything except cruelty disguised as protection?

I sit there all night. Thinking. Weighing. Trying to find another option. Another path. Artother way. But there isn’t one. Every scenario ends with Freya in danger. With the Council attacking. With Asher or someone like him using her against me.
