Larissa was the heiress of the Sowles. Her family had promised to donate a new library to the school.
On the other side were the students‘ parents.
Tom couldn’t offend either side.
If he handled this badly, his career as principal would probably be over.
Larissa stood there quietly.
She had known from the start that Priscilla was much harder to deal with than the other Turners.
Priscilla knew how to borrow power.
And she always planned her moves carefully.
How would the principal handle this?
It was true–Larissa had gotten into Marcrest High through connections.
When Tom stayed silent, the parents shifted their focus to Larissa.
“You should withdraw on your own,” one parent said sharply. “With your elementary–level grades, you’d be lucky to score 20 or 30 points on a test.”
“Ms. Sowle,” another parent added, sounding polite but firm, “I know you’re the long–lost daughter who was just found by the Sowles. Your future is secure without you going to school. But you can’t affect my child’s education. Having a good education is the only way out for my kid.”
A third parent said, almost pleading, “The school doesn’t dare to offend your family. I’m begging you, for my child’s future, to please leave this school on your own.”
Facing the pressure from the parents, Larissa remained calm. Her expression didn’t change.
“Why should I leave?” she asked. “What right do you have to force me out of this school?”
The parents choked for a moment. Then they all started talking at once.
“Because your grades are terrible. You’re at an elementary level, never even finished middle

school, and your behavior is bad. You’re a bad influence.”
“You don’t deserve to study at a top school like Marcrest High.”
“Marcrest High is an elite school. You came in through connections, with elementary–level skills. What right do you have to stay?”
“If you had any shame at all, you wouldn’t even ask that question.”
Just then, a clear and commanding voice cut through the noise. “Enough. Be quiet.”
Everyone turned around. Ruby had walked in.
She stepped to Larissa’s side and gently patted her shoulder. Then she looked at Tom and the
parents.
“My daughter is enrolled at Marcrest High. That makes her a student here,” Ruby said calmly.
“A school is a place to teach and guide students. It is not a place for a group of adults to gang up on my daughter.
“My family donated a library so my daughter could have the right to study here. Is that wrong?”
The
parents were stunned by Ruby’s presence. She was the kind of person they usually only saw in business news.
As expected of the mistress of the Sowles, she carried natural authority.
No one wanted to speak up now. Who had the nerve to offend her face–to–face?
After a brief silence, Priscilla glanced around. Since no one stepped forward, she had no choice but to speak herself.
With a cold, mocking tone, she said, “Mrs. Sowle, that may be true, but Larissa’s grades are awful. Her thinking is questionable. Who knows what harm she might cause other students? Keeping her here is inappropriate.”
Ruby let out a cold laugh.
“You’re Julia’s mother, aren’t you?” she said. “You used to be my daughter’s foster mother. Back when my daughter lived in your house, she suffered quite a lot under you, didn’t she?
“I remember that. One day, I will settle every single account.
“My daughter is my responsibility.
“If her grades are poor, then this school should do what it’s meant to do–teach and guide her.

“And if anyone targets or bullies her on purpose, I wouldn’t stand by and do nothing”
Watching Ruby defend her so firmly, warmth spread through Larissa’s chest.
So this was what it felt like to have a mother.
She protected me unconditionally.
To Larissa, motherly love had always been something abstract.
In both of her lives, she had never truly felt it.
Because of Priscilla, she had even grown to hate the word “mother.”
