Nina tilted her head slightly. “Chase is handsome and accomplished. I’m sure plenty of girls in Linholt like him. I even saw a news story this morning saying he’s found someone new…
Before she could finish, Cecilia cut in sharply, “That’s just tabloid nonsense! Completely made up. My son would never go to those filthy places, let alone get involved with those kinds of women. You’re the only one he’s ever cared about. Honestly, if you just say the word, I’ll have him divorce Katrina immediately!”
“Well…” Nina hesitated, putting on a conflicted expression.
Realizing she’d come on too strong, Cecilia softened her tone. “There’s no rush. You’ve only just come back, after all. But you can rest easy–Chase’s heart belongs to you. If you marry into
our family, he’ll give you the grandest wedding, and I’ll treat you like my own daughter.”
Nina had heard the same lines in her previous life.
What she hadn’t expected was Cecilia’s audacity–after everything that happened five years ago, after the Mercer family’s estate was auctioned off, she still had the nerve to come asking her to marry Chase.
At that moment, Nina’s gaze drifted toward the floor–to–ceiling windows. She spotted Katrina returning and deliberately raised her voice just enough.
“Mrs. Mercer, from what I can see, Chase and Katrina seem quite close. Asking them to divorce might not be a good idea.”
Her voice carried just enough for Katrina, who had reached the entryway, to hear.
Katrina immediately slipped into a corner, listening intently.
Cecilia let out a cold snort. “She threw herself at him. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant and had the child, I never would’ve let Chase marry her–for Wilder’s sake or otherwise. At the end of the day, she’s just a driver’s daughter. Crude, barely educated, and not even that pretty. How could she possibly compare to you?”
Hearing her own mother–in–law speak of her like that, Katrina clenched her fists.
Nina only smiled faintly.
She’d heard these words before, in her previous life.
Only back then, Cecilia hadn’t said them quite this way.

In her previous life, after twenty years of marriage, Chase had finally gotten together with Katrina–by then a wealthy widow. She had built up considerable assets, carried real social standing abroad, took excellent care of herself, and held a respectable job. Most importantly, she had inherited her late husband’s entire fortune.
Back then, Cecilia had sneered at Nina, already worn down by years of marriage. “You’re nothing but someone who threw herself at him. If your Tann family didn’t have money and influence, do you think Chase would’ve married you? Katrina is gentle, virtuous, elegant- nothing like you. Look at yourself. Just a high school education, and you think you’re worthy of my son?”
Nina hadn’t expected to hear the same kind of words again in this life–only this time, the target was Katrina.
She smiled faintly. “Mrs. Mercer, that’s a bit harsh. She did give the Mercer family a son, after all.”
“If it weren’t for that child, I would’ve had Chase throw her out long ago,” Cecilia said bluntly. “But now that you’re back, Nina–if you’re willing to start over with Chase, I’ll have him hand Wilder over to you. You can raise him from now on. He’s still young. Treat him well, and when he grows up, he’ll see you as his real mother.”
That was the last straw.
