The request caught both Marvin and Esther off guard. Caleb, who had been reaching for his car keys to offer a ride, stopped in his tracks. He saw the play immediately.
She wanted to be alone with Jensen.
While Marvin was still processing, Esther smoothed things over. “In that case, we’ll leave her in your care, Jensen. We really shouldn’t leave the event unattended right now.”
“It’s no trouble at all,” Jensen replied smoothly. “I was already planning to head back to the Tann residence tonight.”
Nina’s heart skipped a beat.
Was Jensen staying at their house? That was news to her.
Upstairs in a private suite, Miles had a woman pinned to the bed, the noise from the lobby completely muffled by the heavy door.
“Damn you,” he spat, his grip tightening. “Acted so high and mighty with me, didn’t you? Now look at you–right where I want you. Your luck finally ran out, Nina.”
He vented his pent–up rage on the woman beneath him, oblivious to the fact that it wasn’t Nina at all. It was Katrina.
Katrina’s head was spinning. She had been searching for Chase and Nina, checking room after room, when Miles had suddenly lunged out and dragged her inside. Between his brute strength and the heavy, cloying scent of incense filling the air, her mind had quickly turned to fog. But the mention of Nina’s name jolted her back to reality.
“I’m not Nina! Let me go! Get off me!”
Miles didn’t even hear her. Between the drugs and his own fury, he was past the point of reason. He only wanted someone to break.
Meanwhile, a heavy silence hung in the back of the car as it pulled away from the hotel.
Finally, Jensen broke the quiet, his voice low. “Who drugged you?”
“Miles,” Nina said softly.
“You barely touched your glass.”
“I only took a sip. I had the server take the rest over to him.”
