He thrashed against the guards, but their grip remained absolute. The commotion was already drawing a crowd from the floor below, with guests craning their necks to see the chaos unfolding on the landing.
“Take him downstairs,” Jensen commanded coldly. “Hand him over to Mr. Tann. Let him deal
with his own.”
“Yes, Mr. Grey.”
As the bodyguards dragged Chase away, Jensen’s focus snapped back to Nina. “Can you walk?”
Nina nodded, still in a daze. Jensen didn’t say another word. He simply tightened the jacket around her shoulders, pulling the lapels close to shield her.
The moment Chase reached the lobby and saw the crowd, his face went pale. The arrogance he’d displayed upstairs vanished instantly.
Seeing her son in restraints, Cecilia lunged forward. “What is the meaning of this? Why are you holding my son? Let him go!”
“Chase attempted to assault Nina,” Jensen said, his voice cutting through the noise as he descended the stairs with Nina in tow. “Does that explanation suffice, Mrs. Mercer?”
A hush fell over the room as the guests took in Nina’s appearance. Clad in Jensen’s oversized coat with her hair in total disarray, the situation required no further explanation.
Marvin’s expression darkened with rage, while Esther’s eyes widened in shock. Nina broke away and threw herself into her parents‘ arms, sobbing hysterically. “Mom… Dad… I can’t live with this! I don’t want to live anymore!”
Her breakdown was visceral, the picture of a woman who had suffered a profound humiliation.
The crowd’s gaze shifted to Chase, heavy with judgment. Finally coming to his senses, Chase began to stammer, “Mr. Tann, Mrs. Tann, please–let me explain…”
“Explain what?” Marvin roared, his voice trembling with fury. “Just because the Mercer family has seen a bit of success lately, you think you have the right to lay a hand on my daughter? Five years later, and your family is just as classless as they’ve always been!”
“Mr. Tann, I truly care for Nina! I-”
“You still have the nerve to lie?” Esther interrupted sharply. “Everyone in Linholt knows you’re

a married man with children, Chase. What were you trying to do–humiliate my daughter?”
She turned to the hotel security, her voice cold and final. “Get him out of here. As of this moment, all cooperation between the Tanns and the Mercers is dead. I never want to see a Mercer on Tann property again.”
Without a word, the security guards stepped in and hauled Chase away.
Cecilia lunged forward, shoving past the security guards. “Mr. Tann, this is all just a massive misunderstanding!” she cried. “Our families have such a long history. Chase has always been devoted to Nina–I’m sure this was mutual. Perhaps she was just being a little shy…”
She continued her desperate defense, but Esther’s expression turned lethal. “What exactly are you suggesting? That my daughter threw herself at your son?”
“That’s not what I meant,” Cecilia persisted. “Nina has been fond of Chase since they were children. They had a few drinks, they were alone… things happen.”
Nina let out a cold, sharp laugh.
Five years later, Cecilia was still just as shameless as she’d always been.
Jensen followed with a dry, humorless chuckle. “Ms. Tann is a master’s graduate and a self- made star with an impeccable reputation. As for Chase…” His gaze sharpened. “Frankly, I struggle to see a single redeeming quality.
“I heard he didn’t even finish high school–a middle school education at best. He’s married with children, yet he’s here chasing after Nina. Compared to the Tanns, the Mercers aren’t even in the same league.” He looked Cecilia dead in the eye. “Where, exactly, do you find the audacity to speak like that?”
“You-!” Cecilia’s face contorted, but she forced herself to swallow her rage.
Jensen hadn’t come alone, and everyone in the city knew the Grey family’s reach extended into both the boardroom and the underworld. Crossing them was a risk she couldn’t afford.
Marvin’s voice was like ice. “Not only did your son assault my daughter, but you’ve now attempted to assassinate her character. I’m done listening. Get them out of here.”

The security guards seized Cecilia as well. Clearly blindsided by such a public humiliation, she completely lost her composure.
“This is a setup! Chase was framed!” she shrieked, thrashing against her captors. “You can’t treat us like this! Let me go! Let me go!”
Chase, meanwhile, kept his eyes locked on Nina, waiting for her to say something–anything- to defend him. But Nina wouldn’t even look at him. Back in the room, he’d acted on impulse, but he told himself she hadn’t exactly fought him off at the start. He refused to believe she would just stand by and watch while they were tossed out like trash.
Yet, as the guards dragged them toward the exit, Nina remained silent.
“Nina, are you okay? You must be terrified,” Marvin said, rushing to her side.
