He shot Jensen a look of pure hostility. As a man, he could read the other man’s intentions all too well.

Once Chase was out of sight, Nina finally let her frustration show. “Jensen, weren’t you supposed to be in a meeting?”

“It’s over.” Jensen glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Your parents entrusted you to me today, which means your safety is my responsibility. Get in—I’m taking you home.”

His tone left no room for debate. Before Nina could even think of an excuse, he had already held the door open, waiting for her to slide in. Realizing there was no winning this argument, she climbed into the passenger seat.

Meanwhile, back in the Grey Group boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with confusion.

“Kent… are we continuing or not?”

Kent, Jensen’s secretary, stood there like a deer in headlights. The meeting had been in full swing when Jensen suddenly bolted from the room without a word. Not wanting to make the wrong call, Kent pulled out his phone and dialed his boss.

In the car, Jensen’s screen lit up with the incoming call. He gave it a cursory glance before immediately dismissing it.

Nina caught the movement. “Jensen, if that’s work, you should take it. It might be urgent.”

“Don’t worry about it.” A second later, he shut the phone off entirely.

Nina could feel a strange, sharp tension radiating from him. He was clearly irritated, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on why.

She sat in silence for a few blocks before Jensen spoke again, his voice tight. “Nina, who you choose to spend your time with is your business. But if you’re seriously considering Chase, your parents are never going to approve.”

“Choosing Chase?” Nina looked at him, her expression deadpan.

“I’m pretty sure I’m not deaf. I know exactly what kind of man he is.”

It was then that she realized Jensen had completely misread the situation. She had been baiting Chase, playing a role just to see how far he would go, never imagining that Jensen was eavesdropping–or that he would actually believe her.

Her icy tone silenced him for a long moment. Finally, he muttered, “I just don’t want to see your mother get hurt.”

“She’s my mother. Of course, I won’t let her get hurt.” Nina leaned back against the headrest, studying his profile. “But you’re really something. Five years of total silence, and now you’re suddenly the self–appointed guardian of the Tann family? That’s quite the turnaround.”

“Actually, I spent those five years—”

Before he could finish, a roar of wind from an open window swallowed the rest of his sentence. Nina rolled the glass up, and as the car fell quiet again, Jensen didn’t attempt to continue.

“What was that?” she asked.

“…Nothing. I just hope you’re careful about who you marry.”

Nina gave a dry, indifferent laugh. “Don’t lose any sleep over it. I’m perfectly fine staying single for the rest of my life.”

The car soon pulled up in front of the Tann estate. Nina didn’t wait for Jensen to come around; she hopped out and headed straight inside. It wasn’t until she saw a notification from Charlotte that she remembered she had plans for the evening.

She spun around to head back out and practically ran into Jensen. He caught her by the shoulders to steady her. “Did you leave something in the car?”

“No, I have a party to get to,” Nina said, already sidestepping him. “Could you tell my parents I’ve gone out?”

Before Jensen could even get a word in, she was already hurrying toward the gate. Inside, Esther heard the front door and came to investigate, only to find Jensen standing alone.

“Where’s Nina? I thought I heard her,” she asked.

“She… went out,” Jensen replied.
