“Mrs. Tann, Nina is an adult now,” Jensen said gently. “If it gets late, I can go pick her up myself.”
“If you don’t mind, that would be a weight off my mind. I hate to keep troubling you, though.”
“It’s no trouble at all.”
Esther sighed softly. “You’ve come to visit us every year for the last five years. It’s just a shame Nina was never home; it’s made the two of you grow so distant.”
“Visiting you is the least I could do,” Jensen said quietly.
Esther’s eyes misted over. She reached up and patted his cheek. “You’re a good man, Jensen. You’ve worked so hard these past few years.”
Across town, Nina arrived at the lounge Charlotte had specified. In a plush private suite, Charlotte was draped across a velvet sofa, facing a lineup of ten exceptionally handsome men.
The moment Nina walked in, Charlotte waved her over with a grin. “Nina! Over here!”
Nina scanned the row of men, her eyebrows arching. “Are these the ones you found?”
“Exactly what you asked for! Every single one is a major upgrade from Chase. We’ve got the ‘icy CEO‘ type, the ‘boy next door,‘ the ‘brooding intellectual, the ‘gentle soul… whatever you’re in the mood for, I’ve got it!”
Charlotte had clearly spared no expense. They were all striking, and they had the polished, confident air of men who knew exactly how to charm a woman. One look told Nina they were professionals at making a girl feel like the center of the universe.
“Charlotte… are these professional escorts?”
“Guilty!” Charlotte chirped. “You told me to find guys better–looking than Chase. Since that’s a tall order in the real world, I had to get creative.”
Nina pressed a hand to her forehead, a headache blooming.
She really should have known better than to leave this task to Charlotte.
“Alright, thanks for coming, but you can all go now.”
The men’s faces dropped in unison, looking genuinely wounded.

“Did we do something wrong?” one asked.
“Are we not to your liking?” another added.

They all looked at her with the same heartbroken, “kicked puppy” expression. Even Nina, who was usually impossible to rattle, felt a flicker of guilt.
“I’m still paying you for the full night,” she sighed. “Just… please, go.”
Charlotte blinked in surprise. “Wait, seriously? You’re still not satisfied?”
“I’m trying to find someone who can actually make Chase feel threatened,” Nina replied calmly. “But with the guys you picked… he’d just think I have terrible taste.”
Chase had spent years at The Onyx Club; he’d seen every type of person imaginable. One look at these men, and he would instantly pin down exactly where they came from. If he thought she’d fallen for a escort, he wouldn’t feel jealous–he’d just think she was beneath him. If anything, the whole plan would backfire.
“So… since I’ve already spent the money, isn’t it a waste to just let them go?” Charlotte asked, clearly reluctant. She had already been eyeing the handsome lineup herself.
“Then you have fun,” Nina said. “I’ll go settle the bill.”
“Hey, no way! This is the perfect chance–we’re doing this together!”
Excitedly, Charlotte grabbed her and pulled her down onto the sofa. She turned to the men and announced, “Drinks are on me tonight! Your only job is to make my best friend happy.”
“Wait, I—”
“Oh, come on, stop being so stiff,” Charlotte cut her off. “Just let loose for once and enjoy yourself!”
Before Nina could refuse, several escorts had already crowded around her, vying for her attention, pouring drinks, and coaxing her into games. Surrounded by handsome faces and constant flattery, Nina’s head began to swim. Before she knew it, she had already finished several glasses.
