Chapter 166 False Hope Laid Out
He could not help but wonder how he had ever ended up marrying such a woman.
Cecilia tugged at Chase’s sleeve anxiously.
“Call your lawyer right now and finalize the divorce. We can’t let this drag down the company’s reputation any further.”
“I know what to do.”

Chase was just about to dial his lawyer’s number when his phone rang suddenly. The caller ID showed it was Nina. A flicker of joy flashed across his face.
“Nina? You’re finally calling me.”
“I’m just calling to give you a friendly piece of advice. Don’t get divorced from Katrina right now.” Nina said calmly over the line.
“Why not? You’ve been telling me to sort this mess out. I can end this marriage right away.”
“Think about what the public will say if you split up with her at this critical moment. A stable
conference family image matters most right now. You should take her to hold a press together. Admit your mistakes openly, yet make it clear you still intend to stay married and work things out. That is the best way to salvage Mercer Group’s image.”
Chase felt a surge of guilt hearing her thoughtful words. He could not help thinking how different everything would have been if he had married Nina instead.
In the end, he chose to give in for the sake of the company.
“I get it. Thank you for reminding me.”
“I only wish you all the best. Let’s keep our distance for a while after this.”
Nina hung up the phone right after speaking.
Chase wanted to say more, yet all he heard was the dial tone. He turned toward the doorway
at once.
“Let Katrina come back home.”
The maid stared in shock, and Cecilia looked utterly confused too.

“Are you out of your mind? You finally got the perfect chance to divorce her, why bring that troublemaker back?”
“I’m doing this purely for the company. This divorce cannot happen now.”
With that, he turned and headed upstairs.
On Nina’s side, a faint smile tugged at her lips.
She could easily bring Mercer Group down in an instant, but she had no intention of ending things so quickly. She planned to leave Chase a glimmer of hope first, then crush it completely without mercy.
She meant to lay all his wrongdoings bare for the public to see and ruin his reputation entirely. She also wanted Katrina to taste the pain of being used and discarded by her own husband.
That same night, Katrina moved back into the villa. She tried her best to win Chase over, but he stood up to leave the moment she stepped into the bedroom.
“It’s already so late, where are you going?” Katrina asked hastily.
“I’m sleeping in the guest room tonight.”
“Chase!”
She quickly got out of bed and wrapped her arms tightly around him from behind.
“I know I acted willfully this time, and I’ll never do it again. We’ve been together for years, how can you end everything just like that? I’m the one who stayed by your side all along, not Nina. Don’t you remember how you swore you loved only me?”
“I did say those words once.”
Katrina had barely felt a spark of hope when his cold voice cut her off.
“But I regret every single word now.”
He pried her arms away firmly and walked straight out of the room. Hatred began to brew fiercely in Katrina’s heart.
Early the next morning, Nina had just woken up when a maid knocked on her bedroom door.
“Ms. Tann, Mrs. Cecilia Mercer is here and wishes to see you.”

Nina dragged herself out of bed lazily. She opened the door with a slight frown.

“Mom and Dad already said no one from the Mercer family is allowed inside our house. Who let her in?”
“I’m so sorry, miss, I had no idea about the rule.” The maid apologized repeatedly.
Nina did not mean to blame her seriously. Since Cecilia was already here, she might as meet her.

She fixed her loose loungewear and walked downstairs. She spotted Cecilia sitting comfortably in the living room, happily fiddling with the fancy coffee sets laid out on the table. The Tann family always owned fine luxury goods, and her father was especially fond of brewing top–grade coffee with premium tableware. Cecilia could barely bring herself to put the elegant coffee ware down after touching it a few times.
